South Island

Start: Oban
Location: Stewart Island
Travel Time: 3 hours
Minimum Age: 5

Oneke by Day – The Journey is a guided Stewart Island wilderness experience operating from November to March. Departing from Oban at 10.25am and returning at approximately 1.40pm, the tour includes a return catamaran cruise and exclusive access to Oneke, or The Neck, for a 3–4-kilometre guided coastal and forest walk. Participants must be at least five years old and have reasonable fitness for uneven or muddy tracks.

Explore the Remote Wilderness of Oneke

Begin with a scenic sea cruise from Oban to Oneke, an isolated peninsula on Rakiura Stewart Island rarely visited by travellers. Step ashore to explore regenerating native bush, rugged coastal landscapes and habitats supporting the island’s distinctive birdlife. Exclusive access provides an uncrowded experience and a closer connection with one of New Zealand’s most remote natural environments.

Your local guide brings the landscape to life through stories of Māori heritage, early European settlement and modern conservation work. The walking route covers approximately 3–4 kilometres and may include uneven or muddy sections, making sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing essential. Along the way, listen for native birds, enjoy sweeping coastal views and discover how natural and human history have shaped this remarkable part of Stewart Island.

A reasonable level of fitness is required, and the walking track can sometimes be uneven and muddy. On occasions, we may need to cancel a trip due to weather - please ensure that you provide contact information so that we can keep you updated.
