What do you see and do, where do you go, and where do you stop?
The tour travels from Auckland through Waikato countryside to two guided cave experiences in the Waitomo region. At Waitomo Glowworm Caves, you walk through limestone chambers, including the Cathedral, before taking a quiet boat ride beneath the lights of glowworms in the Glowworm Grotto. The entire guided visit, including the boat ride, takes about 45 minutes.
The second visit is Ruakuri Cave, roughly five minutes’ drive from the first. Its 90-minute guided walk descends a spiral entrance and follows constructed paths past limestone formations, underground water and places where you can see glowworms more closely. The minibus takes the group between the separate cave entrances; you do not need to arrange your own transfer
The planned attraction stops are:
- Waitomo Glowworm Caves: guided walk and glowworm boat ride.
- Ruakuri Cave: longer guided underground walk.
- Meal and comfort breaks: fitted around the cave bookings; their locations and lengths are not fixed in the published itinerary.

What are the departure and return times, and where do you board?
The listed central meeting point is the Mövenpick Hotel Auckland at 8 Customs Street East. Arrive at least 10 minutes before the 6:30am departure. The listing also mentions Auckland accommodation pickup and drop-off, while the operator specifies Auckland CBD pickup; use the location confirmed on your booking rather than assuming pickup is available from every address.
Allow about five hours for the return road journey in total and two hours 15 minutes for the guided cave visits. The rest of the day covers cave check-in, the short transfer between entrances and breaks. With the published 10- and 11-hour durations, a practical Auckland return estimate is 4:30–5:30pm. Traffic and the assigned cave tour times can shift that estimate, so leave room before an evening commitment.
The tour is scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, with the current Go New Zealand booking period shown as October 2026 to May 2027. These are the Auckland tour’s departure days; the caves’ own daily opening schedule does not mean this escorted tour departs daily. Are meals included, can families join, and what happens in poor weather?
Lunch is not listed as an inclusion for this small-group tour. Bottled water and refreshments are provided on the minibus, but plan to pay for a meal or bring food for an appropriate break. Food and drinks are not permitted inside the caves. Travellers who want a Waitomo tour with café-style lunch included can compare the separate private Waitomo Glowworm Caves experience.
Families can join, including those with young children, provided they are comfortable with the early start and long drive. The tour lists child fares for ages 3–11 and infant fares for children under three. Children under eight require a suitable vehicle safety seat; ask about rental when booking. The Glowworm Cave has stairs and no wheelchair access, so the full twin-cave itinerary is unsuitable for someone who needs step-free access, even though Ruakuri Cave itself has an accessible walkway. Children also need to remain quiet during the glowworm boat ride.
The caves stay cool at around 16–17°C, so bring a warm layer and comfortable walking shoes even on a hot day. Ordinary rain does not necessarily prevent an underground visit, but heavy rain can raise water levels or affect access; cave staff may reschedule or cancel a tour when conditions require it.
