Christchurch short stay packages are five- or six-day holidays exploring the city and Canterbury from one accommodation base. They start and finish in Christchurch, with rental-car collection, four or five nights’ accommodation, insurance and selected experiences. Start dates are arranged on request throughout the year, subject to availability. Allow around 30 minutes between the airport and your accommodation, with regional journeys included within the holiday. The packages suit families, couples, food lovers, wildlife enthusiasts and active travellers.

What can you see and do on a Christchurch short stay?

Choose from four Christchurch Escape packages, each combining a city accommodation base with a different selection of Canterbury experiences. Food & Wine introduces local flavours and Waipara vineyards, while Nature & Wildlife focuses on native species and coastal habitats. Family blends city attractions, wildlife, Māori culture and film locations; Adventure brings together walking, kayaking, thermal pools and guided caving.

The table compares the standard inclusions. Follow each package link for its full itinerary, accommodation choices and optional or alternative experiences. Activities in one package are not automatically included in another.

The inclusions above reflect the current package itineraries.

Compare the style of the holiday alongside its length. A guided wine outing allows you to enjoy tastings without driving, while a wildlife itinerary combines independent sightseeing with hosted encounters. Adventure requires greater physical participation, and the Family Escape allows time for several different interests. Choose the programme that best matches your group, then discuss any changes before confirming your dates.

Where do the Christchurch packages take you?

All four packages keep you based in Christchurch throughout the stay. You explore Canterbury on selected outings and return to the city for the night. This arrangement gives you access to different landscapes while keeping your accommodation in one place, with a rental car for independent sightseeing between booked experiences.

In Christchurch, the Ōtākaro Avon River, Botanic Gardens, heritage streets and regenerated central city provide plenty to explore. Depending on the package, your programme may include tram dining, a food walk, native wildlife, Antarctic exhibits or a waka experience. Gardens, riverside walks and cafés also fit into free time around the scheduled activities.

Banks Peninsula lies southeast of the city. Its volcanic hills, harbour viewpoints and coastal bays feature in the Nature & Wildlife and Adventure packages, with included experiences departing from Akaroa. Family and Food & Wine itineraries also offer opportunities to explore the peninsula independently or arrange optional activities. Allow time to enjoy the drive and reach your booked meeting point.

North Canterbury offers another change of scenery. Food & Wine includes a guided Waipara vineyard visit, while Nature & Wildlife includes a full-day journey to Kaikōura for whale watching. Adventure travels to Hanmer Springs for its included thermal pool experience. These destinations feature in different itineraries, so check your chosen route before planning additional stops.

The six-day packages also reach the Canterbury high country. Family includes a guided Edoras filming-location visit, while Adventure explores Cave Stream and Castle Hill/Kura Tāwhiti. Both are substantial outings from Christchurch. Give these days room in your holiday schedule and leave separate regional excursions for another day.

What is included in a Christchurch short stay package?

Each package brings together accommodation, rental-car hire and a defined programme of experiences. Food & Wine and Nature & Wildlife include four nights and five days’ vehicle hire. Family and Adventure include five nights and six days’ hire. The individual itinerary identifies exactly which activities, meals and touring arrangements are included.

The standard package arrangements include:

  • Four or five nights’ Christchurch hotel, motel or apartment accommodation, depending on the package and room selected.
  • Five or six days’ hybrid intermediate AWD SUV rental, with vehicle arrangements confirmed at booking.
  • Fully inclusive rental-car insurance as specified in the booking.
  • The experiences listed as included in your selected Escape itinerary.
  • Guided transport, admission, equipment, meals and refreshments where expressly stated for an included experience.

Accommodation choices include Distinction Christchurch Hotel, Scenic Hotel Cotswold and Bella Vista Christchurch Motel & Apartments, with additional options on selected itineraries. Room categories vary: the Family Escape offers family suites and two-bedroom accommodation, while other packages generally list rooms or studios for couples or individual travellers. Tell Go New Zealand how many people are travelling and which sleeping arrangements you need.

The rental car supports independent travel, but some included excursions provide their own transport. Check each day’s arrangements before driving to an attraction or arranging a separate transfer. Vehicle collection and return details, luggage capacity, child seats and accommodation parking should also be considered when choosing your booking arrangements.

An optional activity adds another experience; an alternative replaces a scheduled inclusion when the exchange is confirmed. Full-day replacements affect the whole day’s programme. Ask for your preferred changes together so accommodation, travel and experiences can be coordinated. Your final itinerary should show the agreed inclusions and any additions clearly before you travel.

When do the packages start and finish, and how long do you need?

Allow five calendar days for Food & Wine or Nature & Wildlife, and six calendar days for Family or Adventure. Arrival and departure are included within those totals. Start dates are arranged on request, with the programme confirmed around accommodation availability, activity schedules and your arrival and departure plans.

The five-day packages provide three complete days between arrival and departure. The six-day packages provide four. These middle days accommodate most of the programme, although Food & Wine schedules its included Tram Restaurant dinner on the first evening. Choose an arrival time that allows for vehicle collection, travel to your accommodation and time to settle in before dinner.

Allow approximately 30 minutes for the drive between Christchurch Airport and your accommodation, depending on the property and traffic. Vehicle collection, luggage handling and airport check-in require additional time. Your final day’s sightseeing depends on your onward departure, so leave adequate time to return the car and reach your flight.

Packages can be requested throughout the year, subject to the availability of their included experiences. Seasonal options and weather-dependent outings may affect the final programme. Give Go New Zealand your intended travel dates before booking flights, particularly when your holiday depends on a specific activity operating that day. Extra nights can be discussed if your flights require a longer stay.

Which Christchurch short stay packages are suitable for families?

The Family Escape is the main starting point for parents travelling with children. Its six-day programme combines wildlife, Antarctic discovery, Māori culture, city attractions and an Edoras excursion, with five nights in Christchurch. Family suites and two-bedroom accommodation provide options for different group sizes, while the rental SUV allows flexibility with independent stops and free time.

The included International Antarctic Centre visit is self-guided general admission, allowing you to explore at your own pace. The Hägglunds ride has a minimum height of 1.2 metres. The Edoras tour has a minimum age of 5 years, so families with younger children should discuss a replacement. Supply children’s ages when enquiring and confirm that every booked experience is suitable for the whole group.

Nature & Wildlife may also appeal to families interested in animals and conservation. Consider your children’s comfort with winding Banks Peninsula roads, a 4WD safari and a substantial Kaikōura outing involving a boat trip. Whale-watch operators have their own participant requirements, which should be checked for the specific excursion booked. Outdoor wildlife encounters also require patience, as animal behaviour and sightings vary.

Adventure is better suited to older children and teenagers who enjoy physical activity. The Half Day Guided Crater Rim Walk has a minimum age of 12 years, and the Cave Stream caving activity has a minimum age of 8 years. Walking over uneven ground, sea kayaking and moving through a river cave involve different skills and confidence levels.

Food & Wine primarily suits adults interested in dining and wine tasting. For a family version, ask about suitable activity replacements and venue requirements. Across all four themes, discuss child seats, room layout and the pace of the programme before confirming your holiday. Leave some free time for rest, playgrounds or an unhurried meal together.

Frequently asked questions

The buildings were removed after filming, but Mt Sunday and the surrounding high-country scenery remain. The Edoras Lord of the Rings Tour uses behind-the-scenes stories and photographs to explain how the location became Rohan’s capital. Replica weapons provide photo opportunities, and the guided summit walk reveals the landscape seen in the films.

The optional Pōhatu Penguin Evening Tour focuses on conservation and sheltered wildlife viewing before nightfall. Late August to December generally offers the strongest viewing opportunities, while activity varies in other seasons. Penguins are usually absent from late February to early April. Sightings remain dependent on natural behaviour, and availability should be checked for your dates.

An Arthur’s Pass tour with a TranzAlpine experience can be arranged as an alternative on a suitable day. These outings combine alpine rail scenery with guided sightseeing, with some returning to Christchurch by road. Allow a full day and confirm which scheduled inclusion it replaces, along with the exact rail section and return arrangements.

Yes. Go New Zealand can tailor the duration or combine your stay with further travel. South Island self-drive holidays offer routes through alpine, coastal and lake regions beyond Canterbury. Alternatively you can combine with other South Island Short Stay packages. Ask for the complete journey to be planned together, including additional accommodation, vehicle hire and any change to the rental-car return location.
