Overnight in Christchurch
This morning, depart Christchurch aboard the spectacular TranzAlpine train, crossing the Canterbury Plains and winding through the Southern Alps via scenic Arthur’s Pass before arriving on the West Coast in Greymouth.
Pick up your rental car at the railway station and drive south along the rugged coastline. Pass through Hokitika, known for its Wild Food Festival, before reaching the stunning twin glaciers—Franz Josef and Fox Glacier.

There are many ways to explore this unique region, guided terminal face walks, heli hikes and scenic flights are all on offer. At the end of your day you could relax in the Glacier Hot Pools.
Leaving Haast, follow the dramatic twists and turns of Haast Pass, a scenic journey through rugged mountain landscapes. Stop at the wilderness town of Makarora to refuel and refresh before continuing past the northern shores of Lake Wānaka and Lake Hāwea, eventually arriving in picturesque Wānaka.
To reach Queenstown, take the Crown Range Road, the highest sealed road in New Zealand, offering breathtaking views along the way. For a more relaxed drive, follow the alternative route alongside the Shotover River, Lake Dunstan, and the Clutha River.

The drive to Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular journeys. Begin with rolling farmland before entering lush beech forests at the edge of Fiordland National Park.
Travel through the rugged Homer Tunnel and emerge into the breathtaking beauty of Milford Sound, a 22km-long fiord dominated by the iconic Mitre Peak. On your cruise, take in towering waterfalls, sheer rock faces, and native wildlife, including seals. After an unforgettable experience, return to Te Anau.
Follow the stunning southern shores of Lake Wakatipu to Alexandra, then stop at the historic mining town of St Bathans before continuing to Ranfurly, known for its art deco architecture. Travel through the rugged landscapes of Central Otago, passing fertile stone fruit orchards and following the Clutha River south to Dunedin.
In the evening, take a tour of the iconic Speight’s Brewery, learning about its brewing history before enjoying a delicious dinner at the Ale House.

Spend the day exploring the Otago Peninsula, a region renowned for its wildlife and eco-tourism. Begin with a visit to Larnach Castle & Gardens, where fascinating stories of scandal, tragedy, and heritage come to life. Admire the magnificent carved ceilings, New Zealand antiques, and breathtaking views from this historic landmark.
Later, take a Monarch Wildlife Cruise from Wellers Rock for a one-hour journey along Taiaroa Head, home to the world’s only mainland Royal Albatross colony. Watch in awe as these magnificent birds glide above the ocean with their impressive three-metre wingspans. You may also choose to visit the Royal Albatross Centre or take a guided tour of the Yellow-Eyed Penguin Reserve for an up-close look at these rare and endangered birds.
Driving from Dunedin, stop to see the fascinating Moeraki Boulders, a collection of unique spherical rock formations located 70km north of the city. Continue to Oamaru, a historic town known for its charming architecture and resident Little Blue Penguins. From there, travel across the Canterbury Plains, passing through Timaru before arriving in Christchurch.
