Easy Riding with Stunning Coastal Views

The Coastal Classic Great Taste Cycle Trail is designed for those who want to enjoy the beauty of the Nelson-Tasman region without rushing. The route spans just 65 km over three days, making it perfect for families, beginners, or anyone after a more relaxed ride. You'll pass through a mix of beaches, farmland, boardwalks, and vineyard-dotted countryside, with plenty of time to stop and explore.

Starting in the Waimea Plains, the trail winds along estuaries and through orchards before reaching the charming seaside hub of Mapua. Hop on the bike-friendly ferry to Rabbit Island, then continue through coastal farmland and artisan-rich towns. With mostly flat riding and only a few gentle hills, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views across Nelson Bay and glimpses of Abel Tasman National Park.

Stoke → Mapua → Motueka → Kaiteriteri (65 km)

Taste, Sip and Explore at a Relaxed Pace

What makes the Coastal Classic truly special is its focus on flavour and local character. Along the way, you’ll find inviting cafés, craft breweries, wineries, and roadside fruit stalls that tempt you to slow down and sample what the region is known for. The Nelson region is one of New Zealand’s major hop-growing areas, so it’s no surprise you’ll pass some brilliant local brews.

From kiwifruit farms to beachside cafés and artist galleries, every stop adds another layer of richness to your ride. The tour finishes at the golden sands of Kaiteriteri, a laid-back beach town and the gateway to Abel Tasman National Park. Whether you're cycling with kids or just keen to ride without a rush, the Coastal Classic is the perfect blend of scenery, taste, and easy going adventure.

Take Your Time: Add an Extra Night in Mapua or Kaiteriteri

For families wanting to slow down and enjoy some extra fun off the bike, adding an extra night in Mapua or Kaiteriteri is a great idea. In Mapua, kids can jump off the wharf at high tide, enjoy an ice cream by the waterfront, or explore the shops and galleries while parents relax at a café. Staying an extra night gives your family time to take a short trip to nearby Upper Moutere, where kids can roam vineyards while grown-ups sample local food and wine.

In Kaiteriteri, an extra night means more time for beach games, swimming, or heading into Abel Tasman National Park for a gentle walk or boat cruise. Families can also enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, or just relaxing at one of New Zealand’s sunniest beaches. Whether your crew prefers splashing in the sea or exploring nature, Mapua and Kaiteriteri are both perfect spots for a fun, family-friendly pause.
