The Wild West Coaster follows Grade 2 (Easy) and Grade 3 (Intermediate) sections of the West Coast Wilderness Trail. Previous cycling experience, confident bike handling and basic fitness are recommended, particularly for the 72 km ride on Day 2.

The trail includes gravel paths, forest tracks, historic water races and winding climbs. Between Lake Kaniere and Kawhaka Pass, Grade 3 switchbacks require good balance and control. Premium eBikes assist with pedalling, but riders must be comfortable cycling independently on uneven terrain.

Frequently asked questions

Pack lightweight layers, a waterproof and windproof jacket, comfortable cycling shorts or trousers, and closed-toe shoes with a firm grip. The West Coast is known for changeable weather, so even if the day starts sunny, rain and cooler temperatures are possible. Padded cycling shorts can make longer riding days more comfortable, while gloves and sunglasses can help protect your hands and eyes.

Start each day with a fully charged battery and use the assistance settings according to the terrain, saving higher assistance for hills and more challenging sections. Battery range varies depending on rider weight, terrain, weather and how much assistance you use. Before departing, ask Kiwi Journeys about charging arrangements at your overnight accommodation and whether you should bring your own charger. Conserving battery power is particularly useful on the longer 72 km second day.

The West Coast is known for its lush temperate rainforests, where towering trees, tree ferns, mosses and native plants create a vibrant green landscape. Along the route, particularly around the West Coast Treetops Walkway and Lake Mahinapua, listen for native birds such as tūī, bellbirds and kererū. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, so take your time at quieter forest sections and waterways, where you may have a better chance of observing birds in their natural habitat.

Food and supply options can be limited along some rural sections of the West Coast, particularly on the longer ride between Scenic Waterways and Kumara. Take enough water and snacks for the day's distance, and do not rely on finding a café or shop whenever you need one. Your tour includes a packed lunch on Day 2, but carrying extra snacks is sensible if you need more energy while riding. Check with the tour operator before departure about any planned stops and where you can refill your water bottle.
