From Hokitika Gorge to Lake Kaniere by Bike
The day begins at the Kiwi Journeys depot in Hokitika with a bike fitting and briefing before travelling by shuttle to Hokitika Gorge. A short walk through lush native bush leads to viewing platforms overlooking the gorge, where calm turquoise waters flow between rocky cliffs. The guided walk lasts approximately 45 minutes and offers time to fully appreciate this unique natural setting.
After the gorge visit, a second shuttle takes you to Dorothy Falls, where the cycling begins. A gentle ride follows the edge of Lake Kaniere through native forest to Hans Bay — an ideal spot for a lunch break and photos. From here, the route continues downhill along the historic Kaniere Water Race, hand-dug in 1875, before following Kaniere Tram Road back into Hokitika. Most riders arrive back in town by mid-afternoon, with time to explore local cafés, galleries or enjoy a well-earned refreshment.
