Experience the Full Trail on the Loop the Loop Adventure

The Loop the Loop Great Taste Cycle Trail is a five-day, self-guided ride that showcases the best of Nelson-Tasman’s varied terrain. Beginning and ending in Nelson, the journey winds through quiet river valleys, hop fields, coastal paths and native bush—each day bringing a new landscape to enjoy. You’ll ride through Mapua, Kaiteriteri, and Wakefield, with time to explore art galleries, local food producers, and boutique vineyards along the way.

From the peaceful banks of the Motueka River to the golden sands of Kaiteriteri, this trail offers a balanced mix of effort and indulgence. Take in panoramic views, enjoy relaxed evenings in quality lodges, and sample the region’s craft beer and fine wine. This full loop ride is about more than just cycling—it’s a deep dive into the heart and soul of the Nelson region.

Scenic Highlights and Memorable Stops Along the Way

One of the trail’s most iconic moments is cycling through Spooners Tunnel, the longest decommissioned rail tunnel open to cyclists in the Southern Hemisphere. You’ll also enjoy ferrying across to Rabbit Island and riding along boardwalks to Mapua, where great food and a creative vibe await at the bustling wharf. It’s a ride rich in variety—from rural plains to coastal bliss.

A relaxing overnight in Kaiteriteri gives you the chance to dip into Abel Tasman National Park or unwind at a beachfront eco-resort. With flexible daily distances, high-quality trail surfaces, and optional rest days in Mapua or Kaiteriteri, this loop is as enjoyable for casual riders as it is for keen cyclists. The Loop the Loop Great Taste Cycle Trail is the ultimate way to truly experience this scenic region by bike.

Take Your Time: Add an Extra Night in Mapua or Kaiteriteri

For those looking to slow the pace and soak up more of the local atmosphere, adding an extra night in either Mapua or Kaiteriteri is a fantastic option. Mapua is a vibrant waterfront village where you can unwind with a wine or craft beer at the wharf, explore boutique galleries, or swim at high tide with the locals. Staying longer here gives you the chance to take a day trip to nearby Upper Moutere, known for its artisan produce, wineries, and creative community.

In Kaiteriteri, an extra night allows you to truly relax in one of New Zealand’s sunniest beach destinations. Spend the day exploring Abel Tasman National Park by boat, kayak, or on foot, or simply unwind at the beach or eco-resort spa. Whether it’s coastal serenity or creative culture you’re after, both Mapua and Kaiteriteri are well worth lingering in.
