Along the way, walk above the forest canopy at the West Coast Treetop Walk, cruise the waterways around Lake Māhinapua and visit the turquoise waters of Hokitika Gorge with a guide. With a separate arrival day in Hokitika, you'll have time to settle in before your four days of cycling.

Frequently asked questions

You should be comfortable riding a bicycle on uneven surfaces, controlling your speed on descents and navigating corners before starting this tour. Electric assistance makes hills easier to climb, but it does not replace the balance, braking skills and judgement needed on the Grade 3 sections between Lake Kaniere and Kawhaka Pass. If you are new to e-bikes, practise starting, stopping, changing assistance levels and braking on gravel before your trip.

Expect a mix of trail conditions rather than assuming the entire route will be smooth and even. Practise riding on gravel and handling gentle descents before departure, keep your hands ready on the brakes, and avoid sudden steering or braking movements on loose surfaces. A comfortable riding position, suitable footwear and correctly fitted helmet can also improve your experience, while following the operator’s advice about current trail conditions will help you prepare for each day.

Mobile coverage can be inconsistent in remote forested valleys and sections away from towns, so you should not rely on having a signal throughout the ride. Download your route information and maps for offline use, keep your phone charged, and save tour operator’s contact details before departure. Let someone know your planned route and expected arrival time, and confirm the operator’s recommended procedure for contacting trail support if you need assistance without mobile reception.

Consider booking extra accommodation if you want time to explore Hokitika, allow for travel delays or avoid rushing to connect with flights and other transport. The tour begins with a bike fitting and briefing on Day 1, while the final cycling day ends in Greymouth at noon before the return shuttle to Hokitika. Confirm your shuttle arrangements and onward transport timings with Kiwi Journeys, particularly if you are planning to catch a flight or connect with another service on the same day.
