The Best of the West Cycle Tour is a day ride that showcases the incredible beauty and tranquillity of New Zealand’s West Coast. Starting from Hokitika, this 53km section of the West Coast Wilderness Trail is perfect for riders looking for an enjoyable yet achievable adventure. With its Grade 2 rating, the track offers a mix of gentle climbs and smooth gravel paths that allow you to truly enjoy the journey.

As you pedal along, you’ll be immersed in the natural soundtrack of the bush, from the calls of Bellbirds and Tui to the chance of spotting a curious juvenile Kea. The trail leads you through lush native forest, peaceful waterways, and the culturally rich Arahura River valley, home to sacred pounamu. Every turn offers something new, whether it’s history, wildlife, or simply the stunning landscapes that make the West Coast so special.

  • Cancellation allowed by 12pm the day before.
  • Rescheduling possible if available.

Itinerary

Your Journey Begins

Come to our depot on Revell Street at 9:45 AM (or at a time we've agreed on) for a bike fitting and a short briefing. After that, we’ll take a 30-minute drive through the countryside to the Kawhaka Canal, where your adventure will start.

Lake Kaniere

Carry on to Lake Kaniere, a beautiful lake 8km long and surrounded by tall kahikatea trees. You can stop for a swim or just enjoy the lovely views. Then ride downhill through more native bush, following the old Kaniere Water Race – hand-dug in 1875 to supply water to Hokitika. This interesting part of local history shows the clever work of early settlers. As you cycle along the water race, you’ll be surrounded by green forest and the cheerful sounds of native birds.

A Scenic Finish

The last part of the ride takes you along Kaniere Tram Road and back into Hokitika. End your day by visiting local art and craft shops, or relax in one of the town’s lovely cafés.
