The Rangitikei River delivers non-stop action, with a thrilling 11 km stretch filled with roaring Grade 5 rapids and smaller waves that keep the energy flowing. Surrounded by lush native bush and steep gorge walls, it’s one of New Zealand’s most spectacular rafting locations. Every rapid offers a fresh challenge, making it the perfect choice for those who crave excitement and natural beauty in equal measure.

Your guides know the river like the back of their hands, combining expert safety skills with plenty of local knowledge. Between rapids, you’ll have moments to take in the scenery, catch your breath, and share a few laughs with your fellow adventurers. This trip strikes the perfect balance between intensity and enjoyment, giving you the best of both worlds.

Duration: Half Day

Summer Season: Trips run twice daily from 1st October to 30th April at 8.15am and 12.30pm

Winter Season: Trips run once daily in May, June and September at 8.30am

Please note: Departures depend on river conditions; we won't go if it's unsafe. The trip may be cancelled if we don't have at least 4 paying passengers.

CANCELLATION & REFUND

  • More than 30 days before – Deposit not refunded; other payments refunded.
  • Less than 30 days – Deposit not refunded; 50% of other payments refunded.
  • Less than 14 days – No refund.

  • You can accept the change, rebook, or get a full refund if major changes are needed (e.g., due to weather).

Frequently asked questions

You’ll need an average level of fitness and a good sense of adventure. Enthusiasm is just as important as fitness—listening to your guide and following instructions is essential for everyone’s safety.

No previous experience is required. Our guides will show you everything you need to know on the day. Just bring your energy, stay alert, and be ready to follow instructions—it’s not a theme park ride!

All River Valley guides are qualified through the New Zealand Rafting Association and SFRITO. Many have international experience and complete regular safety and skills training. All guides are trained in First Aid and CPR.

River Valley Lodge is about 32 km from Taihape, the nearest town. We recommend filling up on fuel and grabbing any supplies before heading out.

Getting Here

River Valley Lodge is located near Taihape in the Rangitikei District, North Island. It’s a scenic rural area, perfect for a stop between Rotorua/Taupō and Wellington, or about 2 hours from Napier, Palmerston North, or Whanganui.
