High Country Enchantment is a full-day horse riding experience operated by River Valley near Taihape for intermediate to advanced riders with extensive riding experience. It combines high-country trekking, faster-paced riding and a picnic lunch, with routes chosen according to weather and trail conditions. The ride operates from 1 November to April.

The trek explores hill country and working farmland around River Valley, where routes can include steep climbs, ridgelines and rougher backcountry terrain. River Valley Stables operates at relatively high elevations, so weather can change quickly and guides may alter the route on the day.

Before setting out, guides match each rider with a suitable horse and introduce River Valley’s freestyle riding and Natural Horsemanship approach. Group sizes are kept small, allowing the guide to adjust the ride around the horses, riders and conditions.

High Country Enchantment is not suitable for beginners. Riders to be at least intermediate level, but for its full-day treks it goes further and states that riders need extensive riding experience. You should be comfortable in the saddle at all gaits and confident over rough, variable terrain.

An intermediate rider is someone who is confident and in control at all paces outside an arena. A strong intermediate is currently riding regularly and comfortable for at least six hours per day, while an advanced rider is very fit and confident on forward-moving horses over rough open ground.

Be accurate about your riding experience when enquiring. If a rider does not have the required expertise for the full-day trek, the ride will be shortened.
