Home on the Range is a three-day, two-night horse riding holiday operated by River Valley near Taihape. It combines two full riding days, Natural Horsemanship training and backcountry trekking, with two nights at River Valley Lodge. The standard package runs from 1 November to 30 April, with extra riding days available on request

The experience is designed for intermediate to advanced riders who want to develop their skills rather than simply follow a set trail. Your riding days can combine arena work, groundwork, obstacle training and longer rides through the Rangitikei high country, depending on your experience and what you want to work on.

Each rider is matched with a suitable horse, giving you time to build confidence and apply new techniques over two days. Evenings are spent at River Valley Lodge in a private ensuite room, with cooked breakfasts, trekker’s lunches and three-course dinners included.

Transfers to and from River Valley Lodge, travel insurance and additional food or drinks outside the package are not included.

Home on the Range is not suitable for beginner riders. River Valley requires guests to be at least intermediate level, meaning confident and in control of a moving horse at all paces outside an arena. Strong intermediate and advanced riders are also suitable.

The minimum age is 13 years and the maximum rider weight is 100 kg. Riders should be comfortable spending extended periods in the saddle and riding over rough or variable terrain.

The standard package is 3 days and 2 nights. Day 1 is arrival day, while Days 2 and 3 are riding days. The exact riding programme is flexible and can include more arena work, Natural Horsemanship, obstacles or longer trekking depending on your goals and progress with your horse.

Extra riding days and additional nights can be added after the standard package for travellers who want more time in the saddle. Please contact us.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. This tour is designed for intermediate to advanced riders. You should already be confident and in control of a horse at all paces outside an arena. It is not intended as a first horse riding experience or as a beginner-level introduction to trekking.

The standard package includes two full riding days, on Days 2 and 3. Your time can be divided between backcountry trekking, arena sessions, groundwork, Natural Horsemanship and obstacle training depending on your ability, goals and how you progress with your horse.

Yes. The standard product is three days and two nights, but extra riding days and accommodation can be added. This is useful if you want more time with your horse or want to extend the balance of training and trekking beyond the two included riding days.

River Valley is near Taihape in the central North Island, around 32 km or 35 to 40 minutes by car from central Taihape. If you are incorporating the trip into a wider North Island itinerary, allow additional driving time and check your route before travel, particularly for the final rural approach to River Valley.
