A Journey Through Ancient Forest to Coastal Shorelines

Begin the Pōhatu Hike & Kayak Combo with a scenic 4WD ride from Akaroa to a trailhead leading into a vibrant endemic forest. Over approximately three hours, venture through towering red beech and prehistoric tree fern groves along a portion of the Banks Track, guided at a relaxed pace with map and trail guidance. The natural canopy echoes with native birdsong, and you’ll pass waterfalls and centuries-old trees in the protected Tutakakahikura Scenic Reserve before emerging into the peaceful setting of Pōhatu Bay.

Once at the bay, enjoy a moment to refresh—changing and refueling using the available kitchen and bathroom facilities. Then transition into your afternoon sea-kayaking safari beginning around 12:45 PM, launching into calm, wildlife-rich waters perfect for exploring by kayak.

Wildlife-Packed Paddle with Conservation Focus

On the sea, paddle along dramatic cliffs, reefs, and sea caves while staying alert for local marine life—penguins bob on the waves, playful seals pop up nearby, seabirds wheel overhead, and with a bit of luck, you may spot the magical Hector’s dolphin. No prior kayaking experience is needed, as the route is guided under safe, settled conditions by experienced leaders. You’ll gain insight into the methods and importance of Pōhatu penguin conservation throughout your paddle.

This combo offers a full immersion in New Zealand’s wild beauty, pairing forest trails and coastal wildlife with education and adventure. Ideal for active explorers who want to hike, kayak, learn, and still have time to discover the charm of Akaroa—this is a day you’ll treasure for its serenity, spectacle, and soulful connection to nature.
