Explore the Legends and Landscapes of Aratiatia Rapids
One of the most captivating stops on the trail is the Aratiatia Dam, where the water’s release transforms calm pools into roaring rapids within minutes. Timed perfectly with the dam’s opening, this spectacle connects riders with Māori history, as the name Aratiatia — “steps of Tia” — honours the chief who first discovered these remarkable rapids. The sight is both thrilling and deeply meaningful, blending nature’s force with cultural heritage.
The return journey offers fresh perspectives, crossing the river and revealing hidden geothermal streams near the Wairakei Resort. Riders can catch glimpses of the geothermal power station, a testament to Taupō’s unique volcanic landscape. With e-bike assistance, every twist and climb feels effortless, making it an accessible yet invigorating way to uncover the wonders of New Zealand’s heartland.
