Cycling Through New Zealand’s Gold Rush History

The Karangahake Gorge Cycle Adventure is one of New Zealand’s most scenic cycling experiences, weaving through steep canyon walls and lush native bush. This part of the Hauraki Rail Trail is steeped in gold rush history, with fascinating remnants of mining life still scattered along the way. With tunnels, bridges, and sparkling river views, the ride is a perfect blend of heritage and natural beauty.

Adding to the enjoyment is a support wagon positioned en route, offering refreshments and a chance to relax at one of the many stunning rest areas. Riders can also choose to take a 45-minute historic train journey from Waikino to Waihi on weekends, adding an extra dimension to the adventure. A guided walk at the Waikino Gold Museum provides an insightful glimpse into the massive furnaces once used for gold processing.

The Karangahake Gorge section of the Hauraki Rail Trail stretches between Waihi and Paeroa, offering a route that is both gentle and captivating. Cyclists can expect an easy-grade ride packed with highlights, from the famous 1.1 km rail tunnel to historic mining relics and river crossings, all framed by dramatic gorge scenery.

Whether enjoyed in a single day or extended to include nearby Tauranga-based trails, this cycling experience is a journey that blends history, adventure, and natural beauty. It’s a ride that leaves lasting memories, no matter how many times you visit.

RIDE CHARACTERISTICS

  • Grade 1-2 riding, Suitable for Beginner riders upwards.
  • 10-50km, (1–4 hours riding) – choose your distance on the day.

Itinerary

  • 8:00 - 8:30am – Pickup from Auckland Pickup point, (or Auckland hotel)
  • 8:30 - 10:30am – Travel to the trailhead.
  • 10:30 - 10:45am – Bike setup per rider and safety briefing
  • 10:45 - 11:30am – Cycle 14km from Waikino to Waihi for a morning tea break.
  • 11:45 - 12:30pm – Enjoy an 8km scenic ride around the Waihi mine pit.
  • 12:30 - 1:15pm – Return ride of 14km from Waihi to Waikino.
  • 1:15 - 2:00pm – Lunch at Waikino, with an optional tour of the Waikino museum and tunnels beneath the old gold ore furnaces.
  • 2:15 - 3:30pm – Cycle 10km from Waikino to Paeroa, passing through a historic railway tunnel and over railway bridges.
  • 3:30 - 6:00pm – Packup and travel back to Auckland drop-off point/hotel.
