With its balance of easy cruising and thrilling rides over suspension bridges, this trail is perfect for both leisure seekers and adventure lovers.

You’ll pass by vineyards and olive groves that invite you to pause for a taste of the region’s famous produce. Lake Dunstan Trail, Central Otago

Located in the heart of Central Otago, the Lake Dunstan Trail captures the essence of this region’s dramatic beauty. Riders cross the iconic Hugo Suspension Bridge, cycle alongside turquoise waters, and weave past rocky outcrops shaped by nature and history. This trail offers more than just a ride – it’s a journey through the spirit of Otago.

Whether you’re pedalling for a relaxed day out or chasing a new adventure, the Lake Dunstan Discovery Cycle Trail delivers a perfect mix of challenge and charm. It’s the kind of experience that lingers long after the ride is over, leaving you with a deeper connection to Central Otago’s landscapes and stories.

Today, you've got four choices!

Option A: We shuttle you to Clyde (9.15am) and you ride back to our base in Cromwell
Option B: Leave from our depot in Cromwell and ride to Clyde for an afternoon pick-up at 4.00pm
Option C: Speed Boat Transfer: Take the Lake Dunstan Explorer, Cromwell to Clyde departing Cromwell at 9.15am - (additional $85pp)
Option D: Speed Boat Transfer: Take the Lake Dunstan Explorer, Clyde to Cromwell departing Clyde Dam at 3.00pm - (additional $85pp)

Note: We offer this adventure in both directions, but we recommend Option A or C! It's safer as you'll be cycling on the inside of the trail, plus you can reach Carrick Winery just in time for lunch and a glass of wine around 1pm, which is why we suggest this route.

Itinerary

Explore the breathtaking landscapes of Central Otago on the famous Lake Dunstan Cycle Trail. This scenic route connects Clyde and Cromwell, following Lake Dunstan, the Kawarau River, and the majestic Clutha River. Perfect for a one-day cycling adventure! Pick-up and drop-off are available from Queenstown or Wanaka for an additional $80 per person each way (return trip $160).

Clyde Heritage Precinct to Dunstan Arms Rowing Club – 3.5km (Grade 1)

Kick off your ride from the Clyde Heritage Precinct, crossing the Clyde Bridge (shared with traffic), before joining the trail towards the impressive Clyde Dam, New Zealand’s third-largest hydro-dam. This initial stretch is on sealed roads, offering an easy introduction to the trail as you make your way to the Dunstan Arms Rowing Club.

Dunstan Arms Rowing Club to Halfway Hut – 10.7km (Grade 2-3)

Cycle along the picturesque lakeside, with plenty of scenic picnic spots to enjoy along the way. As you approach Halfway Hut, the trail becomes more challenging with a short switchback section featuring tight corners and a satisfying climb and descent.

Halfway Hut to Cairnmuir Gully – 8.4km (Grade 2-3)

This stretch requires a bit more skill and focus, with narrow paths and steeper gradients. You’ll reach the highest point of the trail here, rewarded with spectacular views. Midway through, cross the Hugo Suspension Bridge, and at the end of this section, treat yourself to delicious coffee and snacks at Coffee Afloat.

Cairnmuir Gully to Bannockburn Inlet – 11.3km (Grade 2-3)

Cycle past the iconic bluff bridges and the Cairnmuir slide’s dramatic rock faces. This section takes you through vineyards and olive groves, where you can stop for a wine and lunch break at Carrick Winery & Restaurant. Continue towards Bannockburn Inlet, a popular spot with a designated swimming area for a refreshing dip.

Bannockburn Inlet to Cromwell Heritage Precinct – 7km (Grade 2)

The final leg leads you under the Bannockburn Bridge, following Lake Dunstan to the Cromwell Heritage Precinct. Here, you can explore boutique galleries, shops, and cafes before cycling 2.5km back to the Cromwell office to return your bikes by 5pm.
