Explore the scenic Great Taste Trail at your own pace on this 32 km self-guided cycling adventure. With easy-grade trails and plenty of family-friendly stops, this route takes you through the stunning Tasman region, offering opportunities to sample wines, craft beers, and local delicacies along the way.

Itinerary

9:00–9:30 AM – Start at Nelson Depot

Arrive at the Nelson base for bike fitting and a tour briefing.
Customise your ride with tips on attractions and stops that suit your interests.
Optional: Spend a little time exploring Nelson City before hitting the trail.

Morning – Nelson to Richmond (Railway Reserve)

Follow the blue Great Taste Trail markers along the Railway Reserve Cycle Path.
Pass through suburban landscapes with potential stops like the Classic Car Museum or Pics Peanut Butter World for a quirky, family-friendly visit.
Optional Break: Try a mid-morning craft beer at Stoke Brewery or Eddyline Brewery.

Late Morning – Richmond to Rabbit Island (Coastal Path)

Turn onto the scenic Coastal Route, passing the Waimea Estuary’s boardwalks and farmland.
Spot significant birdlife, such as the elegant White Heron, as you cross the iconic Waimea Swing Bridge.
Tip: Stop for wine tasting at Seifried Estate or Te-Mania Winery.

Midday – Rabbit Island Beaches & Swimming

Reach Rabbit Island, where you can enjoy a swim in freshwater swimming holes or relax on the sandy beach.
Take a break to soak in the serene surroundings before continuing your journey to the ferry.

Early Afternoon – Ferry to Mapua Wharf

Board the charming Mapua Ferry for a short crossing over to the lively Mapua Wharf.
Spend time exploring galleries, studios, and boutique shops, or relax with a drink at the Golden Bear Brewery.

4:30 PM – Return Shuttle to Nelson

Your shuttle departs from Mapua Wharf at 4:30 PM (winter timing), arriving back in Nelson around 5:05 PM.
