ABOUT THE TSS EARNSLAW
Set sail into the heart of Queenstown's rich tapestry of history aboard the TSS Earnslaw, affectionately dubbed the "Lady of the Lake." This grand old dame has been a cornerstone of Queenstown's heritage since she first graced the waters of Lake Wakatipu. Commissioned by New Zealand Railways, her journey began in the same year as the ill-fated Titanic, marking her maiden voyage on the 18th of October, 1912. More than just a vessel, the TSS Earnslaw became a lifeline, connecting the remote farming communities scattered along the lake's shores with the wider world.
Spanning an impressive 48 metres, she was the largest craft to navigate Lake Wakatipu, ferrying not only passengers but also livestock, essential mail, and supplies, weaving a network of connection in an era of isolation. The brink of 1968 almost saw her consigned to history, but fate intervened, and she was revitalized to continue her voyages across the lake, enchanting passengers with her timeless charm.
Undergoing meticulous restoration, the TSS Earnslaw today is a portal to the past; stepping aboard is like stepping back a century, with every detail lovingly preserved to offer one of the most authentic heritage experiences globally. Her unique character has captured the imagination far beyond the shores of New Zealand, earning her spots in the limelight of Hollywood, from a cameo in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" as an Amazon River Boat to influencing the design of the trawler SS Venture in Peter Jackson’s "King Kong." Her influence even extends to the world of music, inspiring famous composer Ron Goodwin to craft a piece echoing the rhythm of her engines.
The TSS Earnslaw's story is not just one of survival but of flourishing, as she continues to enchant and connect people, not only with each other but with a bygone era, making her voyage a must-experience journey through time in the heart of Queenstown.
