Itinerary
Wānaka Your day kicks off with pickup from the Wānaka Lakefront Car Park. From there, we’ll cruise out of town and cross the mighty Clutha River – one of New Zealand’s largest and most powerful waterways.
Lake Hāwea Lookout (10 min) Heading west, we’ll wind our way past the stunning Lake Hāwea. Get your camera ready – we’ll make a quick stop at a lookout nestled between Lake Wānaka and Lake Hāwea for jaw-dropping views.
Blue Pools Walk (1 hr) Tucked inside Mt Aspiring National Park, the famous Blue Pools are a real treat. This easy 3km return walk takes you through native beech forest to crystal-clear glacial waters – it’s a must-see stop on the way to the West Coast.
Thunder Creek Falls (20 min) Just a short 5-minute walk from the road brings you face-to-face with the spectacular 28-metre Thunder Creek Falls. Cascading from a hanging valley, this waterfall is a stunning reminder of the region’s glacial past.
Lunch at the Hard Antler, Haast (45 min) Time to refuel! We'll pull into the Hard Antler in Haast, where you’ll have 45 minutes to enjoy a classic Kiwi lunch in this rustic local gem.
Ship Creek Beach & Walk (30 min) As we journey north along the wild West Coast, we’ll stop at Ship Creek. Here, ancient rainforest brushes up against the Tasman Sea. Kick off your shoes, feel the sand between your toes, and take a short, scenic 1km stroll through the dunes and wetlands.
Bruce Bay (10 min) This is where native rainforest meets the roaring ocean in dramatic style. Bruce Bay is a wild, windswept spot – perfect for a quick photo and a deep breath of salty sea air.
Lake Matheson (1 hr) Next up is a photographer’s paradise. Lake Matheson is famous for its mirror-like reflections of Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman. Enjoy an easy loop walk and take in unforgettable views of the Southern Alps.
Franz Josef We'll pass through the glacier country, cruising by Fox Glacier before arriving in Franz Josef. You’ll be dropped off right at your central accommodation, ready to explore this charming alpine town.
