North Island short stay packages are five-day, four-night holidays in Auckland or Rotorua. They normally start and finish in Auckland, combining accommodation and selected experiences with airport transfers for Auckland stays or rental-car hire for Rotorua. Allow around three hours’ driving each way for Rotorua, with the main sightseeing on Days 2–4. Start dates are arranged on request, subject to availability. Options suit families, couples, food lovers and active travellers.
Should you choose Auckland or Rotorua for your short stay?
The main difference is how you want to travel. Auckland offers a central city base with airport transfers and selected guided excursions. Rotorua gives you a rental car and several days to explore from one accommodation base.
Both destinations offer five themed packages. Compare the practical arrangements below, then choose the itinerary that best matches your interests and preferred pace.

Where do North Island short stay packages start and finish?
Auckland packages normally begin with an airport transfer to your accommodation on Day 1 and finish with a return transfer on Day 5. Stay in the same Auckland accommodation for four nights, returning after each excursion. Selected itineraries include full-day journeys to Hobbiton or Rotorua, so check the travelling time involved alongside the attractions.
Rotorua packages normally begin with rental-car collection in Auckland. Drive south through the Waikato, spend four nights in Rotorua and return the vehicle in Auckland on Day 5. Allow approximately three hours’ driving each way, plus stops, vehicle collection or return, and airport check-in.
The five-day duration includes both travel days. If your Rotorua itinerary includes a cultural evening on arrival day, choose flights that leave enough time to collect the car, drive and check in. Extra nights or local vehicle collection can be discussed when tailoring your holiday.
Start dates are arranged around accommodation, transport and activity availability. Request your preferred dates, including any flexibility, so the complete programme can be coordinated.
What can you experience in Auckland and Rotorua?
Auckland Short Stay Packages
Auckland’s five escapes combine different experiences while keeping your overnight base in the city. Family focuses on Hauraki Gulf wildlife cruising, Waiheke ziplining and Wētā Workshop Unleashed. Must-Do brings together Hobbiton, Rotorua sightseeing and America’s Cup sailing.
Food & Wine features city tastings and vineyard visits in Waiheke and Kumeū. Culture & History explores Māori perspectives and local heritage, while Adventure combines sailing, bridge climbing, kayaking, walking and cycling. Choose the theme closest to your interests, then discuss suitable changes.
Rotorua Short Stay Packages
Rotorua’s five escapes offer different combinations of Māori culture, geothermal attractions, conservation and outdoor activities. Family includes Mitai Māori Village, the National Kiwi Hatchery, Wai-O-Tapu and Mt Tarawera. Geothermal & Hot Pools combines Te Pā Tū, geothermal sightseeing, bathing and volcanic exploration.
Culture & History features Te Puia and guided cultural interpretation in Whirinaki Forest. Nature & Wildlife focuses on kiwi conservation and native forest walking, while Adventure includes Kaituna River rafting, Mt Tarawera and forest ziplining. The individual itineraries identify which experiences are included and which are optional or alternative.
What is included in a North Island short stay package?
Each standard package combines four nights’ accommodation, transport arrangements and the experiences listed as included in its itinerary.
Depending on your chosen package, inclusions cover:
- Four nights at selected Auckland or Rotorua accommodation.
- Return Auckland Airport transfers for Auckland-based stays.
- Five days’ rental-car hire for Rotorua self-drive stays, with vehicle and insurance arrangements specified in the booking.
- Admission and participation in the included tours and activities.
- Guiding, ferry travel, activity equipment and tour transport where specified.
- Meals, refreshments and tastings identified with individual experiences.
An optional experience adds to the programme; an alternative experience replaces an inclusion when agreed. Either can affect the price and daily schedule, so arrange changes before booking independent activities.
Choose accommodation around your group’s needs. Confirm the room layout, beds, cooking facilities and any child-seat requirements when enquiring. Flights, fuel where applicable, personal spending and meals outside the stated inclusions should be allowed for separately.
Which meals are included?
Meal arrangements depend on the experiences in your itinerary. The Auckland Food & Wine Escape includes city food and beverage tastings, with lunches on its Waiheke and Kumeū touring days. Other Auckland packages include selected lunches or an activity-related dinner, while the Family Escape leaves most meal choices to you.
In Rotorua, the Family Escape includes Mitai Māori Village’s hāngī dinner, and Geothermal & Hot Pools includes the feast at Te Pā Tū. Check individual excursions for any other meals or refreshments.
Tell us about dietary requirements when enquiring. Keep cultural evenings free for the booked programme, and allow time to return from full-day excursions before reserving dinner elsewhere.
Which packages suit families and different activity levels?
Start with the Auckland Family Escape or Rotorua Family Escape, then check every included experience against your children’s ages and abilities. Auckland’s ziplining has participation requirements, and its wildlife cruise involves an extended time aboard a vessel.
The Rotorua Family Escape includes the National Kiwi Hatchery, with a minimum age of 5 years, and Mt Tarawera, with a minimum age of 7 years. Families with younger children should request suitable replacements before booking.
Adventure packages require closer attention to fitness, terrain and swimming ability. Rotorua Rafting’s full Grade 5 Kaituna River experience has a minimum age of 13 years. Scenic and cultural itineraries can offer a gentler emphasis, although some include substantial walking or longer touring days.
Supply children’s ages, any mobility needs and your preferred activity level so the holiday can be matched to everyone travelling.
