Ride the Queen Charlotte Track: Torea Saddle to Anakiwa

This one-day ride is a favourite among mountain bikers looking for a mix of technical challenge and scenic beauty. Starting at Torea Saddle, riders can test their skills on the steep and rugged Shamrock Ridge or take the easier Kenepuru Road route to Te Mahia Saddle. From there, the trail eases into a flowing Grade 3 section that winds through native forest and ridgelines with stunning coastal views.

The final descent into Anakiwa is smooth and fast, making for a thrilling end to a rewarding ride. Along the way, you’ll pass through lush bush and catch glimpses of the glistening Queen Charlotte Sound. With a water taxi return to Picton included, it’s a perfect full-day adventure for confident riders.

Difficulty and Tour Information

The Queen Charlotte Track offers breathtaking scenery but is a challenging and technical route for mountain biking, best suited for experienced single-track riders. The trail features loose rocks, tree roots, branch litter, and steep climbs and descents, demanding a high level of skill. After heavy rain, the clay-based surface becomes slippery, with reduced traction and significant mud buildup, adding to the difficulty.

For novice or beginner riders, this trail is not recommended. Instead, consider exploring the Picton Waikawa Track or sections of the Link Pathway, which offer a more suitable and enjoyable biking experience. Walking the Queen Charlotte Track is also a fantastic option to fully appreciate its beauty at a gentler pace.

Grade: 3-5 | 3 (optional 1 hour road ride to skip grade 5 section)
