Cycle Nelson, Māpua & Spooners Tunnel on the Great Taste Trail

The Delight Great Taste Trail Cycle Tour is a four-day self-guided cycling adventure that blends scenic rides with the best local flavours. Starting in Nelson, the journey takes you through stunning landscapes, from vineyard-dotted trails to lush hop farms and coastal paths. With longer cycling days at the start and relaxed finishes in Māpua and Nelson, you’ll have plenty of time to soak in the beauty and sample the region’s finest produce.

Each day offers a unique experience, from riding through the historic Spooners Tunnel to crossing a suspension bridge over the Baton River. You’ll pass through charming towns, visit local cafés, and explore orchards before arriving in Māpua, a vibrant coastal village. The final leg brings you back to Nelson via Rabbit Island, with a stop at the Classic Car Museum. This tour includes bike hire, accommodation, luggage transfers, and a ferry crossing, with optional e-bike upgrades and add-ons for extra adventures.

  • Cycling Route & Requirements – Well-maintained trails pass through vineyards, orchards, and coastal landscapes. The longest cycling day covers 69km, requiring a moderate fitness level.
  • Spooners Tunnel Precautions – A headlamp and jacket are necessary for riding through the longest decommissioned tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere.

While it’s one of NZ’s sunniest regions, weather can still shift quickly—pack layers.

Flying is the most direct option. If driving:

  • From the North Island, take the Cook Strait ferry.
  • From Christchurch, expect about a 6-hour drive.

NZ weather is unpredictable—pack for all conditions. If the trail becomes unsafe, we may offer shuttle support (additional fees apply).

Your bag must weigh 15kg max. We’ll label and log your luggage and deliver it daily—usually ahead of your arrival. Extra bags or heavier gear may incur additional charges.

We recommend someone in your group knows how to fix a flat. If your hire bike becomes unrideable, we’ll get a replacement to you. Damage or misuse may incur repair costs.

Bringing your own bike? Make sure it’s serviced and pack spares specific to your setup.

Most of the trail has reception, but expect blackspots in remote areas. International visitors should consider a local NZ SIM to avoid roaming costs.
