5 Day Queen Charlotte Track: Self-Guided Comfort and Scenery

This five-day independent experience on the Queen Charlotte Track lets you walk at your own pace while we take care of the logistics. From daily lunches to luggage transfers and Picton drop-offs, everything is arranged to keep things stress-free. It's the perfect blend of adventure and comfort with no need to rough it.

Each night, you'll unwind in standard ensuite rooms at beautiful lodges dotted along the track, including Furneaux Lodge, Punga Cove, Portage Hotel, and Lochmara Lodge. These spots are known for their welcoming vibe, fine wines, and delicious meals (you'll just need to sort your own brekkie and dinner). After a day on the trail, there's nothing better than a warm shower and a hearty meal with a view.

Highlights of the Lodge to Lodge Queen Charlotte Walk

The Queen Charlotte Track is famous for its mix of native bush, ridgeline views, and crystal-clear bays—this walk gives you time to soak it all in. Without the weight of a full pack, you can fully enjoy the stunning Marlborough Sounds and its quiet, uncrowded trails. Each section offers a new perspective, from tranquil forest to sweeping coastal panoramas.

Because the walk is self-guided, you’ve got the freedom to stop for photos, take breaks by the water, or linger a bit longer at scenic spots. You’ll meet other walkers at the lodges and share stories over local wine and fresh kai. It’s a uniquely Kiwi way to explore one of Aotearoa’s most iconic tracks.

Frequently asked questions

Mobile reception is sporadic along the track. It is available on the first day during the boat journey to the start of the Queen Charlotte Track. However, from Ship Cove to Camp Bay (the first two days), there is no reliable mobile coverage. The sections of the track that traverse the ridge line on Day Three and Four offer good mobile coverage.

In summer (December–February), daytime temperatures typically range from the early to late 20s°C, with very hot days reaching up to 30°C. Spring (September–November) offers milder conditions, ranging from 14°C to 20°C, while autumn (March–May) brings cooler, settled weather, with temperatures around 16°C–18°C in March, dropping to 10°C–12°C by May.

Winter (June–August) features crisp, calm days with overnight lows below 0°C and daytime highs up to 10°C. Rain is possible year-round, though January through March are the driest months. Dress in layers for comfort, including thermal undergarments, a fleece top, shorts, long trousers, a warm jacket, and a raincoat.

When walking the Queen Charlotte Track, each person is limited to one item of luggage weighing no more than 15kg. This is because the luggage is transported by water taxi each day and needs to be lifted on and off the boats. A suitcase with wheels or a duffle bag works well for this purpose.

For any additional baggage, you can store it at our waterfront office. Alternatively, if you are staying in Picton before and after your walk, many local accommodation providers offer storage services for excess luggage.

No, you have the option to arrange for water taxis to transfer your pack between your accommodations along the track. This allows you to only carry a smaller day pack while walking.

It is essential to have the right gear and skills for the trip. Plan and equip yourself accordingly. Stay updated on the latest information about facilities you plan to use and local weather conditions. Be prepared for changing weather conditions and have appropriate clothing and equipment.

From Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch International Airport, Air New Zealand offers direct flights to Blenheim Airport, just a 20-minute drive from Picton. Affordable shuttle services are available, or you can rent a car.

Alternatively, you can take the Interislander ferry across Cook Strait to Picton or fly with Soundsair, a commuter airline based at Wellington Airport. From Christchurch, popular options include the scenic Kiwi Rail train journey to Picton, public bus services, or car rentals.
