Discover the Ancient Secrets of Aotearoa’s Forests

Step into the heart of New Zealand’s native forest on a guided walk designed to connect you with nature at its most authentic. Your guide will help you spot native birdlife like tūī, kererū, and kōkako, along with fascinating forest insects. The easy tracks and gentle gradients make it perfect for anyone keen to slow down and take in the wonders of the ngahere.

Along the way, you’ll hear stories of the conservation efforts that protect this vibrant ecosystem. The sanctuary’s success in restoring bird populations, including the reintroduction of kōkako and rifleman, highlights Aotearoa’s dedication to wildlife protection. Each step you take helps you appreciate the scale of work done to preserve this living treasure.

Feel the Calm and Spirit of the Ancient Forest

As you wander beneath towering tawa, rewarewa, and rimu trees, the forest hums with life and song. The air is filled with the calls of kākā, bellbirds, and fantails, creating a natural soundtrack unique to Aotearoa. In the kākā clearing, you can pause to watch these playful parrots socialise and soar through the canopy.

Take a moment to rest at the base of an ancient northern rātā and marvel at its vast roots merging into the forest floor. Small group sizes ensure a peaceful and personal experience, giving you space to absorb the beauty around you. Whether you choose to continue exploring or unwind with a cuppa at the Visitor Centre, the forest’s calm presence will stay with you long after your walk.
