A Glimpse Into Aotearoa’s Most Remarkable Wildlife Stories
The takahē, once thought extinct, stands as a proud symbol of hope and resilience. Rediscovered in Fiordland in 1948, this flightless bird now thrives within the wetland’s safe enclosure. Observing them up close offers a moving connection to New Zealand’s conservation triumphs.
By joining the Tautari Wetland tour, visitors play an active role in supporting wildlife protection. Every visit contributes to the Sanctuary Mountain® Maungatautari takahē recovery programme. It’s a chance to witness conservation in action and be part of Aotearoa’s living legacy.
