Bikes are available daily, with 2, 4 and 8-hour hire options; the lighthouse is around 45 minutes’ ride away. Hire includes a fitted comfort mountain bike, helmet, repair kit, carrier rack and pannier, and suits beginners, families and experienced cyclists wanting to explore at their own pace.

Explore Pencarrow’s Coast at Your Own Pace

Start at Pencarrow and follow the largely flat coastal trail towards Pencarrow Head, where maritime history and rugged scenery come together. The lower lighthouse is approximately 7 km away and takes around 45 minutes to reach by comfort mountain bike, making it an achievable goal for a shorter ride. From here, explore the historic lighthouses and nearby lakes, with expansive views along Wellington’s coastline and across Cook Strait towards the Kaikōura Ranges on clear days.

Choose a longer hire and you can venture beyond the main Pencarrow sights, taking side tracks, stopping for a seaside picnic or continuing towards Fitzroy Bay and the remains of the SS Paiaka. An eight-hour hire gives you time for a fuller exploration of the coastline without rushing between stops. With gel seats, front suspension and disc brakes, the comfort mountain bikes are well suited to recreational riders who want to decide for themselves how far the day takes them.

Frequently asked questions

The main coast trail is flat from Wildfinder Pencarrow to Baring Head. However, accessing the top Pencarrow Lighthouse, lakes, or Baring Head involves some hills.

It’s approximately 7km to the bottom Pencarrow Lighthouse, taking about 45 minutes on a Comfort Mountain Bike, and about 20 minutes on an eBike.
