Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Auckland

Welcome to Auckland, the vibrant City of Sails. After checking in to your central hotel, you’ll have the afternoon free to explore. Take a stroll along Queen Street, admire harbour views from the Sky Tower, or enjoy a drink at one of the buzzing laneway bars. This evening, meet your Tour Director and fellow travellers over a welcome dinner and cocktail.

Day 2: Auckland to Hamilton

Board the Northern Explorer Scenic Plus train and enjoy premium seating and regional flavours as you travel south through rolling countryside. On arrival in Hamilton, you’ll visit Zealong Tea Estate for a guided tour, tea ceremony and their Signature High Tea. In the evening, head to Raglan for a tranquil sunset dinner cruise on the harbour.

Day 3: Sanctuary Mountain & Waitomo Caves

This morning you’ll explore the ancient forest of Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari on a custom-guided tour. Learn about native wildlife and traditional Māori uses of the forest plants. After lunch in Otorohanga, continue to the magical glowworm-lit caverns of Waitomo for a guided underground boat ride.

Day 4: Hamilton to Tongariro or Rotorua

Today you’ll travel aboard the Northern Explorer Scenic Plus through the central plateau. Guests travelling to Tongariro will enjoy a scenic excursion to Tūroa ski field for panoramic views. Alternatively, Rotorua guests will transfer by coach and have the afternoon at leisure to explore the geothermal hub.

Day 5: Tongariro National Park/Rotorua

Guests in Tongariro will journey to Taumarunui for a relaxing lunch and stroll through Lauren’s Lavender Farm. In Rotorua, enjoy a peaceful daytime walk among the towering redwoods on the Treewalk, followed by a cultural feast and storytelling experience at Te Pā Tū in the evening.

Day 6: Travel to Wellington

This morning begins with an elevated view over the volcanic peaks before joining the Northern Explorer once more. Enjoy commentary and a scenic lunch onboard as you pass rivers, gorges and coastlines en route to Wellington. Upon arrival, settle into your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening in the capital.

Day 7: Explore the Capital

Today begins with a city orientation tour covering iconic spots like Cuba Street, Oriental Bay and Parliament. Afterwards, explore at your leisure. Visit Te Papa Museum, take a cable car ride, or relax at the waterfront. In the evening, enjoy dinner with your group at a local favourite.

Day 8: Cross the Cook Straight to Marlborough

Settle into the Premium Plus Lounge aboard the Interislander Ferry and cruise across the Cook Strait. As you enter Queen Charlotte Sound, enjoy views of native bush, inlets and mussel farms. In Marlborough, enjoy a vineyard lunch and tastings at two wineries, with a sweet stop at Makana Chocolates.

Day 9: Train to Kaikōura

Take a boat to a pāua pearl farm in the Marlborough Sounds and enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at this rare aquaculture. Then board the Coastal Pacific Scenic Plus train and enjoy a relaxed coastal ride to Kaikōura, arriving in time to enjoy a seafood dinner or sunset walk.

Day 10: Train to Christchurch

Start the day with a guided Dolphin Encounter, where you may spot dusky dolphins leaping in the surf. In the afternoon, board the Coastal Pacific once more. Enjoy Scenic Plus dinner and drinks onboard as the landscapes shift from coast to plains.

Day 11: Discover Christchurch

Day 12: TranzAlpine to the West Coast
