Step back in time on a two-day adventure from Stratford to Taumarunui, travelling the full 142 kilometres of the Forgotten World railway. Along the way, you’ll pass through 24 tunnels, cross 98 bridges, and uncover stories of early settlements now reclaimed by nature. This remarkable journey allows you to disconnect from the everyday while immersing yourself in the pioneering history of New Zealand.

The experience includes a memorable overnight stay in the Republic of Whangamomona, with dinner, breakfast, and the chance to soak up the unique character of this remote community. Morning tea, lunch, and afternoon snacks are provided on both days, and your luggage is transferred for convenience. Whether you continue your travels independently or arrange a return shuttle, this is an unforgettable way to explore the Forgotten World.

WHAT TO BRING

Sturdy footwear (no jandals), sunglasses, sunblock, sun hat, camera, water bottle, snacks, layers/warm clothing (gloves, beanie hat, scarf – we often experience four seasons in one day), waterproof jacket, warm jacket, insect repellent and allergy medications. A waterproof storage container for bags/belongings is available on the rail carts.

ACCOMMODATION

Stay the night before or after your experience at the Forgotten World Motel in Taumarunui for your comfort and convenience. Cooked and continental breakfasts available (plus GF and DF options) – enquire on check-in.* Centrally located, it’s the ideal base from which to explore the region’s activities and is within easy walking distance of the town’s cafés, restaurants and shops.

Itinerary

Day 1: Stratford to Whangamomona

9:15am – Arrival and Shuttle to Stratford
Begin your adventure by meeting at Amity Court Motel in Stratford. Leave your luggage and keys (if your vehicle needs shifting) at reception. From here, a shuttle will take you to the start of the rail line for your 9:30am departure.

Morning Tea at Douglas
Hop onto your rail cart and journey to Douglas, where you’ll pause for morning tea. Take 20 minutes to enjoy the refreshments and soak in the atmosphere of this historic spot.

Lunch and Farm Visit in Te Wera
Continue along the track to Te Wera, where a 30-minute lunch break awaits. Afterward, spend another 30 minutes exploring Avonstour Organic Farm, gaining insight into sustainable farming practices in the heart of the Forgotten World.

Afternoon Rail Cart to Whangamomona
Your rail cart will then carry you through stunning scenery to the iconic Whangamomona, arriving around 3pm. After stepping off the cart, walk across the road to the famous Whangamomona Hotel, where you’ll enjoy a relaxing evening.

Dinner, Bed, and Breakfast
Settle in for the night with a delicious dinner at the hotel. Experience the charm of the self-proclaimed Republic of Whangamomona, then rest well in your comfortable accommodation.

Day 2: Whangamomona to Taumarunui

8:00am – Breakfast and Departure
Begin the day with a hearty breakfast in the hotel’s dining room. Once you’ve checked out and left your luggage at reception, return to your rail cart for a 9am departure.

Stops at Tāngarākau Gorge and Heao
Travel to Tokirima, making scenic stops along the way, including a 20-minute morning tea break at the breathtaking Tāngarākau Gorge. These stops offer incredible photo opportunities and a chance to stretch your legs.

Lunch and Souvenirs at Tokirima
Arrive in Tokirima for a 30-minute lunch break. While here, browse the unique souvenirs at ‘The Shed,’ perfect for a memento of your journey.

Rail Cart to Matiere via Ōhura
Continue your rail cart adventure, passing through the quiet settlements of Ōhura and Matiere. Pause for a 20-minute afternoon tea break in Matiere, enjoying the tranquillity of this hidden gem.

Final Stretch to Okahukura Station
Complete your 142km journey by rail cart, arriving at Okahukura Station. From here, a 10-minute shuttle will take you back to the Forgotten World Mote at Taumarunui, where you’ll arrive around 5:30pm, marking the end of this unforgettable two-day experience.

Whether you plan to continue your travels from Taumarunui or return to Stratford, the organisers can assist with vehicle transfers or shuttle services to suit your needs.
