The Department of Conservation will open bookings from 12 May 2026, with different tracks opening on different days through 21 May 2026. For international travellers, this is the point where trip planning should start becoming practical.

Bookings for the 2026/27 season open on the following dates:

  • 12 May 2026: Paparoa Track
  • 13 May 2026: Milford Track

What travellers should do before bookings open

Choose your first-choice track now

Do not wait until booking week to decide which Great Walk you want to prioritise.

Be flexible with dates

A short date range usually gives you a better chance than aiming for one exact departure.

Plan the logistics around the walk

Before bookings open, it helps to know where you will start and finish, whether you need track transfers or water taxis, where you will stay before and after the walk, and how the hike fits into the rest of your New Zealand holiday.

Be ready before your preferred track opens

Make sure you understand the booking process, your likely dates, and your backup options before your preferred track goes live.

Not sure which Great Walk suits you best?

If you are still deciding between tracks, our ranking guide breaks down New Zealand’s Great Walks to help you compare the experience, difficulty, and planning considerations before booking dates open.

Planning around the booking window

For many travellers, the easiest approach is to choose the walk first and build the wider holiday around it.

That could mean shaping a South Island trip around Milford Track, Routeburn Track, or Kepler Track, or building extra time into places like Te Anau, Queenstown, Nelson, or Picton depending on the track and the transport flow you need.

If Hump Ridge Track is on your shortlist, note that it sits outside the main DOC Great Walk booking schedule above and should be planned separately from this booking window.

What we can organise for your Great Walk holiday

If you already know you want to walk one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, we can help take care of the practical side around the hike through our supported hiking packages.

Depending on the package, Go New Zealand can help with:

  • local support and advice
  • hut bookings
  • car or bus relocation where needed
  • hiking food packages
  • premium gear hire
  • track transport planning
  • fitting the walk into your wider New Zealand holiday

This is often the difference between simply securing a date and having the rest of the trip flow properly around it.

The Great Walk booking dates for the 2026/27 season are now set. If one of these tracks is part of your New Zealand plans, now is the right time to get organised before bookings open.

Frequently asked questions

The Short Answer: Book the Routeburn or Hump Ridge.

The Strategy: Don't panic. The Routeburn Track offers similar alpine scenery and is often slightly easier to book than the Milford.

The New Option: The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track (New Zealand's newest Great Walk) offers a rugged, sub-alpine experience with luxury upgrade options that are less crowded than the main trails.

The Short Answer: Moderate to High, depending on the Tier.

The Breakdown:

  • Tier 1 (e.g., Rakiura): Requires moderate fitness. Expect 3–4 hours of walking per day on gentle terrain.
  • Tier 3 (e.g., Tongariro Northern Circuit): Requires high fitness. Expect 6–8 hour days on exposed, uneven volcanic terrain. We recommend training with a weighted pack at least 3 months prior.

The Short Answer: No, provided you book a hut early.

The Details: All Great Walks have huts equipped with bunks and mattresses (except the Whanganui Journey, which is a river trip).

The Catch: Tracks like the Milford Track strictly prohibit camping. If you miss a hut booking, you cannot just bring a tent as a backup; you will not be allowed on the track. Our packages include secured hut bunks so you don't need to worry about camping gear.

The Short Answer: The Abel Tasman Coast Track.

The Details: We rank this as the best entry-level option because of its mild elevation and flexible logistics.

  • Why: You can use water taxis to skip difficult sections or transport your luggage, allowing you to walk with a day pack.
  • Runner Up: The Paparoa Track is excellent for those wanting a steady gradient without steep staircases.

The Short Answer: May 2026.

The Details: The Department of Conservation (DOC) typically announces the specific dates in April, with the booking system going live in May. Because "Tier 3" tracks like the Milford and Routeburn sell out in minutes, we recommend joining our 2026 Priority Waitlist to get an alert the moment the dates are confirmed.
