Is ten days enough to visit both the North and South Islands?

In Self-Drive

Ten days is enough to visit both islands when the itinerary follows a logical one-way route and concentrates on a manageable group of destinations. Auckland–Rotorua–Wellington–Picton–Kaikōura–Christchurch works particularly well because it includes major North Island attractions and the South Island’s scenic east coast without requiring domestic flights or extremely long drives.

A ten-day holiday is less suitable for travellers wanting to include Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, Christchurch, Aoraki/Mount Cook, Queenstown, Milford Sound and the West Coast in one journey. Although some active itineraries cover many of these places, they involve frequent hotel changes and several four-to-six-hour travel days. Travellers who prefer two-night stays, longer walks or weather contingency should choose 12–14 days. Ten days works best as an introductory holiday, while a longer itinerary provides a more relaxed exploration of both islands.
