North Island

Start: Auckland
Duration: 5 days

The 5-Day Auckland Food & Wine Escape is a five-day, four-night holiday arranged by Go New Zealand, starting at Auckland Airport. It includes a city food tour, Waiheke ferry and wine tour, Kumeū vineyards, two lunches, central accommodation and airport transfers. Allow four hours for city tastings, most of a day for Waiheke including 40-minute ferry crossings, and about five hours for Kumeū. Departure dates are arranged around tour availability. It suits adults interested in food and wine.

What do you see and do, and where do you go?

Your first full day introduces Auckland through The Big Foody’s Tastebud Tour. Travelling with a guide, you visit selected food businesses and taste products that reflect the city’s communities. Stops change with the day and season: a weekday may feature a coffee roaster, while a weekend tour may visit a farmers’ market. The tour also provides context for Auckland’s waterfront, neighbourhoods and volcanic landscape.

On Day 3, a ferry crosses the Hauraki Gulf to Waiheke Island. The included Gourmet’s Food and Wine Tour combines hosted tastings, local produce, island commentary and a vineyard lunch. Day 4 turns west towards Kumeū for cellar-door visits, lunch and a stop at Muriwai Beach. The coast provides a change from the vineyards, with black sand and views over the Tasman Sea.

The package includes four nights in a selected central Auckland hotel. Tour departure points, venues and ferry connections are confirmed with your booking.

Is it suitable for families, and what fitness, distance and terrain should you expect?

The standard itinerary is best suited to adults. The Kumeū wine tour lists a minimum age of 18, and the Waiheke operator currently says its shared Gourmet’s Food and Wine Tour is not suitable for guests under 18. Families should request a revised itinerary with age-appropriate experiences before booking. The city food tour can welcome children, but that does not remove the restrictions on the included wine days.

Fitness grade: easy in practical terms. Most travel is by vehicle or ferry, with short walks at food businesses, vineyards and viewpoints. There is no scheduled long-distance walk, ride or hike in the standard package. Consequently, it has no fixed walking distance in kilometres or elevation gain in metres; neither figure is published for the five-day itinerary. Expect city footpaths, winery entrances and outdoor ground at Muriwai, which may be uneven or wet. Tell Go New Zealand if steps, standing for tastings or boarding the ferry may be difficult, so the individual venues and transport can be checked. Families should request a revised itinerary before booking; the 5 Day Auckland Family Escape offers a different selection of included activities for children and adults.

What should you bring, what is provided, and what happens in rain?

Accommodation, airport transfers, the Waiheke return ferry and transport during the guided tours are arranged as part of the package. Guides organise the scheduled tastings and lunches. Bring comfortable walking shoes, a light rain jacket and a way to carry any food or wine you buy. Take photo identification for alcohol tastings. You will need to make your own way from your hotel to the Day 2 meeting point and the Downtown Ferry Terminal unless your confirmed itinerary specifies otherwise.

The Tastebud Tour and Waiheke food tour can operate in rain. Severe weather may change outdoor stops or disrupt ferry travel, so check your sailing before leaving for the terminal. If a ferry or tour is cancelled, contact Go New Zealand to discuss the available rearrangement under your booking conditions; do not assume another departure will connect with the same island tour. A rain jacket is also useful for the exposed stop at Muriwai Beach.

Frequently asked questions

Tell Go New Zealand about allergies and dietary needs before the tours are confirmed. The Big Foody says it will try to arrange suitable alternatives with notice. The Waiheke operator also asks for advance notice, but currently states that its shared Gourmet’s Food and Wine Tour is not suitable for vegans. See the Waiheke tour details when considering whether that experience fits your needs.

The Kumeū tour operator lists the Muriwai gannet viewing season as approximately September to mid-April. A colony visit depends on access and conditions on the day; Muriwai Beach remains a coastal stop outside the nesting season. The Muriwai page provides more background on the beach and its wildlife.

Yes, subject to availability and how much time you want between activities. The Auckland Harbour Dinner Cruise is an optional evening experience with a three-course meal and a sail on Waitematā Harbour. It is separate from this package’s included lunches and tastings; check its departure against your arrival time or return from Waiheke.
