From Bark Bay to Falls River Through Forest & Coastal Scenery

Step ashore at Bark Bay and begin walking south through one of the most picturesque sections of the Abel Tasman Coast Track. A short climb leads towards views over Medlands Beach and a pou whenua honouring Hohaia Rangiauru, a past chief of Te Ātiawa, adding an important cultural connection to a landscape often celebrated primarily for its natural beauty. From here, the trail winds through native bush where the calls of kākā may accompany you through the forest.

Continue between coastal viewpoints and sheltered native vegetation towards Falls River, where one of the walk’s standout features awaits. The 47-metre suspension bridge carries the track high above the river, with forest and water below and another change of scenery beyond. It’s this constant movement between beach, bush, river and elevated coastal views that makes the Bark Bay to Anchorage section such a rewarding introduction to the Abel Tasman Coast Track.

From Torrent Bay Lagoon to the Golden Sands of Anchorage

Beyond Falls River, the track descends towards Torrent Bay and its broad tidal lagoon. Your route here can change with the tide: follow the forested high-tide track around the estuary or, when conditions allow, take the low-tide shortcut across Torrent Bay. If time permits, you can also detour to Cleopatra’s Pool, a clear natural rock pool tucked into the bush and known for its naturally formed waterslide.

The final stretch continues through native forest and beachside clearings towards Anchorage, where golden sand and calm coastal water provide an inviting place to finish the walk. With time before the afternoon water taxi, relax by the beach and take in the surroundings before cruising back along the Abel Tasman coastline to Marahau — a scenic ending to a day experienced both on foot and from the water.
