Where Tangaroa Meets Tāne Mahuta

The Two Gods journey brings together two defining landscapes of Abel Tasman — the sea and the forest. Your guided kayaking section explores golden beaches, granite headlands and sheltered bays, with the exact route shaped by the tides. On Route 1, paddle from Awaroa to Onetahuti, with the possibility of exploring the tidal waterways of Shag Harbour. On Route 2, paddle from Onetahuti towards Bark Bay, passing through the Tonga Island Marine Reserve and waters known for New Zealand fur seals and coastal birdlife.

Whichever route operates, approximately two hours are spent kayaking with an experienced guide before a beachside lunch and the transition to the self-guided walking section. This tide-tailored approach means the direction of travel changes, but the essence of the experience remains the same: seeing Abel Tasman first from water level and then from within its native coastal forest.

Two Routes, One Abel Tasman Kayak & Walk Adventure

Route 1: Awaroa → Onetahuti by kayak, then Onetahuti → Bark Bay on foot. After paddling south from Awaroa, leave your kayak at Onetahuti and walk approximately 6.4 km to Bark Bay. The Coast Track passes golden Onetahuti Beach and historic Tonga Quarry before continuing through native forest towards the Bark Bay estuary. Allow around two hours for the walking section before meeting the afternoon water taxi.

Route 2: Onetahuti → Bark Bay by kayak, then Bark Bay → Anchorage on foot. Paddle south through the Tonga Island Marine Reserve to Bark Bay, then continue independently along the Coast Track to Anchorage. Cross the Falls River suspension bridge and walk through native forest towards Torrent Bay and Anchorage. Depending on the tide and route taken around Torrent Bay, the walk covers approximately 9.2–11.7 km and takes around three hours before your return water taxi to Mārahau.
