South Island

Start: Marahau
Locations: 3 See all
Duration: 1 day
Travel Time: 8 hours
Distance: 9.5 kms
Difficulty: 2
Minimum Age: 14

This full-day Abel Tasman adventure starts and finishes in Mārahau, combining independent sea kayaking along the Astrolabe coast to Anchorage with a 9.5 km coastal walk. Check-in is at 8:15am from October–April or 9:00am from May–September, with around four hours of paddling and eight hours overall. Operating September–May, it includes a double kayak, paddling and safety equipment, waterproof map and briefing; guide and lunch are not included. It suits active, independent travellers comfortable exploring without a guide.

Paddle the Astrolabe Coast at Your Own Pace

Your day begins in Mārahau with a comprehensive briefing covering weather, tides, local conditions, paddling technique, safety and self-rescue. An on-water assessment follows before you set out independently, giving you the practical preparation to explore the Astrolabe coastline and Anchorage area at your own pace.

Once underway, Abel Tasman unfolds from water level: golden beaches, native bush and sheltered bays line the route north. Independent kayaking gives you the freedom to choose your pace and pause when somewhere catches your eye, whether that means taking a beach break, enjoying the coastal scenery or simply spending more time on the water before reaching Anchorage.

Swap Your Paddle for a 9.5 km Coastal Walk

After the kayaking section, continue the adventure on foot with an independent 9.5 km coastal walk. Moving from sea to trail changes the perspective completely, taking you from open water and beaches into the native bush and elevated coastal scenery that make walking in Abel Tasman such a natural complement to kayaking.

Combining the two activities is what makes this day distinctive. Rather than experiencing the national park solely from the water or the track, you get both perspectives in one active day, with the independence to move at your own pace. Allow around eight hours for the complete experience from Mārahau.
