Discovering the Rugged Coastline of Punakaiki

Your tour begins with a coastal drive along the Great Coast Road to Punakaiki, one of New Zealand’s most iconic natural sites. The famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes are a geological wonder, formed over millions of years by the ocean’s relentless force. Keep an eye on the surf as Hector’s Dolphins often play close to shore, adding a magical touch to the experience.

Travelling further north, you’ll pause at Charleston Bay, a beautiful spot known for its rugged coastline and photo opportunities. The journey continues to Westport, where you’ll enjoy time to explore the town and grab a relaxed lunch. This part of the day is a perfect mix of sightseeing and downtime, giving you space to soak in the atmosphere.

Mining Legends and Rugged Landscapes

From Westport, you’ll head to Denniston, once home to a thriving coal mining community with one of New Zealand’s most famous inclines. The engineering behind the Denniston Incline is astonishing, and the views from the plateau are equally impressive. Here, history meets scenery in a way that captures the spirit of the West Coast.

On the way back south, the Tauranga Bay Seal Colony offers a final highlight of the day. A short walk takes you to viewing platforms where seals bask and play in their natural environment. Informative displays along the track reveal fascinating details about seal life and the region’s past sealing industry.
