Discover one of New Zealand’s most stunning cycling experiences on the Roxburgh Gorge Trail. This 1-day adventure takes you from Clyde to the impressive Roxburgh Dam, following the Clutha Mata-au River through breathtaking landscapes adorned with dramatic bluffs, historic gold workings, and fragrant thyme.

Your Itinerary

Start Your Journey
Begin your day with a bike fitting and briefing:
- Cromwell Depot: 8:30am, followed by a shuttle to Clyde at 9:15am.
- Clyde Meeting Point: 9:15am, ready to begin your adventure.
(Optional transport from Queenstown, Wanaka, or Cromwell accommodation is available for an additional cost.)
Clyde to Alexandra (12km)
Cycle along the scenic river trail linking Clyde and Alexandra, riding beside the mighty Clutha Mata-au River. This gentle section provides a relaxed start, offering picturesque views as you approach the Roxburgh Gorge Trail near the Alexandra Bridge.
Alexandra to Doctors Point (10km)
Enter the heart of the Roxburgh Gorge, flanked by towering bluffs up to 350 metres high. This section winds through rugged terrain, including the dramatic “Narrows,” where narrow paths and boardwalks add a thrilling touch to the ride. Take in the majestic scenery as you pedal to Doctors Point.
Jet Boat Experience (45 minutes)
At Doctors Point, hop aboard a jet boat for a memorable journey deeper into the gorge. This guided trip offers fascinating insights into the region’s rich gold-mining history and provides a unique perspective on the river’s beauty.
Shingle Creek to Roxburgh Dam (12km)
Disembarking at Shingle Creek jetty, continue cycling towards the grand finale of your ride. This final section features switchbacks leading to the impressive Roxburgh Hydro Dam Lookout. Completed in 1956, this engineering marvel is the largest concrete gravity dam in New Zealand, capable of powering up to 200,000 homes.
Return Transfer
At 3:00pm, meet your shuttle at the Commissioner’s Flat car park for your return to Clyde, Cromwell, Queenstown, or Wanaka.
