Overview
A tour to the Te Anau Glowworm Caves starts with a scenic cruise on a purpose-built ferry across magnificent Lake Te Anau. Following landing on the western shoreline of Lake Te Anau, there is time to see the informative displays at Cavern House prior to your friendly nature guide escorting you into the caves in a small group.
This underground world is amazingly beautiful. Here you will discover a strange underground world of rushing water, before drifting in soundless darkness below the bright flicker of thousands of glowworms.
The caves are very young (12,000 years) by geological standards; and are still being shaped by the power of the river that pours through them forming a winding complex of limestone passageways filled with sculpted rock, whirlpools and a thunderous subterranean waterfall.
Away from the roar of the water, deep within the caves, you will be taken by small boat into a silent concealed grotto occupied by thousands of glowworms. In the cavernous darkness, the glowworms create a dazzling show that is nothing short of amazing.
