Discover Central Otago’s Most Dramatic Ride

The Roxburgh Gorge Cycle Trail delivers one of the most scenic day rides in New Zealand, tracing the Clutha River through towering schist cliffs. The landscape feels wild and untouched, with sweeping river bends and rugged rock formations at every turn. It’s a ride that immerses you in nature from the first pedal stroke.

As you travel through the gorge, you’ll spot remains of the region’s gold‑mining past tucked into the hillsides. These historic relics give the ride a sense of story and connection to early pioneers. It’s an inspiring mix of adventure and heritage set in a truly remote environment.

A Dramatic Journey Through Central Otago

The Roxburgh Gorge Cycle Trail offers a 34 km ride through one of Central Otago’s most awe-inspiring landscapes. Stretching between Alexandra and the Roxburgh Dam, this Grade 2–3 trail follows the turquoise waters of the Clutha River, flanked by rugged schist cliffs and dotted with remnants of gold mining days gone by.

What sets this ride apart is a unique jet boat transfer between Doctors Point and Shingle Creek—linking the otherwise impassable midsection of the gorge. With limited access and few interruptions, this trail delivers a real sense of isolation, history and natural wonder, all within a single day’s ride.
