Departures operate from October to April only.

Cycle the Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold Trails

Follow the Clutha Mata-au River through Central Otago's gold-mining country on this three-day self-guided cycling holiday. Covering approximately 109 km from Clyde to Lawrence, the route connects two of New Zealand's Great Rides, the Roxburgh Gorge Trail and Clutha Gold Trail. Cycle past steep schist cliffs, old mining settlements, orchards and rural communities, with a scenic jet boat transfer between Doctors Point and Shingle Creek taking you through a remote section of Roxburgh Gorge.

Spend your first night in Roxburgh Hydro Village before continuing through the Teviot Valley to Millers Flat. The final day follows the river through Beaumont Gorge, passing the historic Horseshoe Bend Suspension Bridge on your way to Lawrence. With premium eBikes, two nights of accommodation, luggage transfers and return transport to Cromwell included, you'll have time to explore the area's gold-rush history and stop at riverside viewpoints along the way.

The Gold Trails Cycling Tour suits active couples, friends and recreational cyclists who want to explore Central Otago's gold-mining history and riverside trails over three days.

The Clutha Gold Trail offers mostly easier Grade 2 cycling, while Roxburgh Gorge includes intermediate sections with narrow tracks, climbs and remote terrain. Premium eBikes assist with pedalling, and luggage transfers mean you can cycle without carrying your overnight bag.

Previous cycling experience and a good level of fitness are important, particularly on Day 1. You'll need to be comfortable riding for approximately three to five hours each day, with the longest planned stage covering 45 km.

The tour is less suitable for complete beginners or riders uncomfortable with narrow gravel tracks, remote areas or longer cycling distances.

The Roxburgh Gorge Trail includes stretches without mobile phone reception. The middle section has no continuous cycling track, so the included jet boat transfer is required to reach Shingle Creek. Riders should be comfortable cycling independently in remote areas.

  • Roxburgh Gorge Trail: Grade 2–3, with narrow sections, climbs and remote terrain
  • Clutha Gold Trail: Grade 2 (Easy), with gravel paths and gentle gradients
  • Route: Clyde – Roxburgh Hydro Village – Millers Flat – Lawrence – return shuttle to Cromwell
  • Distance: 109 km
  • Ride Time: approximately 3-5 hours riding each day
  • Fitness Level: previous biking experience and a good level of fitness are required

Frequently asked questions

Pack comfortable cycling clothing, lightweight layers and weatherproof outerwear, as Central Otago conditions can change during the day. Good-quality cycling gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen and a reusable water bottle are also useful for longer days on the trail. Since luggage relocation is provided, keep your main bag within the tour’s luggage allowance and use your pannier or handlebar bag for items you may need while riding.

Although the daily riding time is generally around 3–5 hours, it is worth allowing additional time for photographs, refreshments, exploring the historic towns and simply enjoying the river and Central Otago scenery. The self-guided format gives you flexibility to take breaks rather than treating the route as a race. Planning a few longer stops can make the experience more relaxed and give you more opportunity to appreciate the gold-mining heritage and changing landscapes.

Mobile coverage can be inconsistent on sections of the Roxburgh Gorge and Clutha Gold Trails, particularly where the route passes through more remote valleys and gorges. It is sensible to download any information you may need before setting out each day and avoid relying entirely on your phone for navigation or communication. The included trail map and tour support provide additional reassurance when cycling through areas with limited connectivity.

Yes. The cycling experience can be extended by two additional days to include the next sections of the Clutha Gold Trail from Lawrence to Milton and then Milton to Waihola. This allows you to experience more of the trail network rather than finishing in Lawrence. An extended itinerary can be arranged on request, with the additional cost provided based on your preferred travel dates and requirements.
