Explore the remote heart of the South Island on this 7-day gravel cycling tour from Christchurch to Queenstown. Ride quiet backcountry roads through the Mackenzie Basin, cross iconic passes like Hakataramea and Danseys, and pedal past turquoise lakes, golden tussocks, and snow-capped peaks. This ride is designed for keen gravel cyclists seeking challenging climbs and spectacular views.

The route follows early pioneer and gold mining trails, including the Roxburgh Gorge and Lake Dunstan Trails. From the volcanic slopes of the Banks Peninsula to the alpine landscapes of Central Otago, each day offers new terrain, hearty food, and local hospitality. The trip ends in Queenstown, New Zealand’s adventure capital—perfect for a celebratory finish.

  • Fitness Level & Terrain: This tour is graded 4 (moderate to challenging), requiring a good level of fitness. Riders should be able to cycle 6-8 hours per day over 80-100 km, with long, undulating sections, river crossings, and mixed gravel surfaces.
  • Trail Surface: The route is 90% gravel and 10% sealed roads with light traffic. Riders should be comfortable on both surfaces and aware of road rules.
  • Bike Hire: Bike hire (including helmets) is not included in the package. Gravel and electric bikes are available to rent.
  • Support Vehicle: A support vehicle is available if riders need rest during the cycling journey. Some remote routes, like Danseys Pass, will have limited van access due to terrain conditions.
  • Weather and Road Conditions: Guests should prepare for variable weather, challenging climbs, and potentially rough gravel sections. Expect river crossings where feet may get wet.
  • Personal Expenses: Guests are responsible for expenses such as phone calls, internet, laundry, shopping, optional activities, and beverages not included in the meal plan.
  • Travel Essentials: Guests should bring a reusable water bottle and arrange for travel insurance.
  • Arrival & Departure: International and domestic flights, as well as arrival and departure transfers, are not included.

What should I pack?

New Zealand’s weather is unpredictable, so bring waterproof gear and plenty of layers. Polyester, wool, or nylon fabrics are best, as they dry quickly and provide warmth. Avoid cotton, which retains moisture. We’ll provide a full gear list with your pre-departure information.

Can I bring my own equipment?

Yes! You’re welcome to bring your own bike, pedals, seat, walking poles—whatever makes you comfortable. Just let our team know in advance.

Our guided trips offer an immersive experience with expert guides who stay with you from start to finish. You’ll travel with a small group of like-minded adventurers (maximum of 14 people), and groups of 8 or more will have two guides—one cycling with you and one driving the support vehicle. Our trips include:

What is the accommodation like?

We’ve carefully selected 3–4 star family-run motels, lodges, heritage accommodations, farm stays, backcountry huts, and hotels. Each trip page provides specific details about where you’ll stay.

Many of our Cycle Trail trips are great for families with children over two years old. We can usually provide bike trailers (max weight 40–60kg) and trail-a-bikes for kids aged 4–9. Discounts are often available for children under 15 when sharing a room. Contact us to discuss your family’s needs.
