Do I need a visa to go to New Zealand from Australia?

Entry requirements for travellers arriving from Australia depend on your specific citizenship and residency status.

Australian Citizens

  • Visa: Not required.
  • NZeTA: Not required.
  • IVL Cost: Exempt (Free).
  • Rule: You can enter New Zealand using your Australian passport and stay as long as you like.

Australian Permanent Residents

  • Visa: Not required.
  • NZeTA: Required (NZD $17–$23).
  • IVL Cost: Exempt (You do not pay the $100 levy).

Other Nationalities Travelling from Australia

If you are not an Australian citizen or permanent resident, normal entry rules apply:

  • Visa Waiver Citizens (e.g. UK, USA): Must hold an NZeTA and pay the $100 IVL.
  • All Others: Must hold a valid New Zealand Visitor Visa.

Note for Chinese & Pacific Island Nationals: You may be exempt from the Visitor Visa if you travel directly from Australia with an eligible Australian visa. You may only need an NZeTA.
