South Island

Start: Marahau
Locations: 3 See all
Duration: 1 day
Travel Time: 8 hours
Difficulty: 2
Minimum Age: 12

This full-day Abel Tasman adventure departs Mārahau and combines water taxis, a 7.7 km self-guided walk from Torrent Bay to Bark Bay, and guided kayaking from Observation Beach. Check-in is at 8:15am, with around 2.5 hours walking and two hours paddling within an eight-hour day. Operating October–April, it includes two water-taxi trips, kayak equipment, guide, lunch, map, photos and video, and suits active travellers aged 12+ with no kayaking experience required.

Walk from Torrent Bay to Bark Bay

Begin with a scenic water-taxi journey from Mārahau to Torrent Bay, watching Abel Tasman’s golden beaches and forested headlands unfold from the water before stepping ashore for the independent walking section. From Torrent Bay, follow 7.7 km of the Abel Tasman Coast Track towards Bark Bay, moving between native forest, coastal viewpoints and secluded stretches of shoreline at your own pace.

A highlight along the way is the Falls River Suspension Bridge, where the track crosses high above the river amid native bush. After approximately 2.5 hours on foot, arrive at Bark Bay and take a break before the next stage of your adventure. From here, a water taxi carries you to Observation Beach, where your kayak guide and a completely different perspective on the national park await.

Swap the Coast Track for a Guided Sea Kayak

At Observation Beach, meet your guide for a safety briefing and kayaking instruction before setting out along the Astrolabe coastline towards Mārahau. From water level, forested headlands, hidden coves and golden beaches take on a different character, while seals and seabirds may make an appearance as you paddle south through the national park.

Expect approximately two hours of kayaking interspersed with breaks, allowing time to enjoy the scenery rather than simply covering distance. When conditions are favourable, there may even be an opportunity to raise the kayak sail and harness the sea breeze for part of the journey back to Mārahau; an exhilarating finale to a day that has taken you through Abel Tasman by boat, on foot and by kayak.
