South Island

Start: Marahau
Locations: 3 See all
Duration: 2 days
Difficulty: 2
Minimum Age: 14

This two-day independent Abel Tasman adventure departs Mārahau and combines kayaking to Anchorage, overnight camping and a 12.4 km Coast Track walk back. Check-in is at 8:15am, with kayaking until 3:45pm on Day 1 and a 3.5-hour walk on Day 2. Operating September–June, it includes kayak and safety equipment, waterproof map and camping pass. It suits self-sufficient travellers aged 14+ comfortable kayaking, camping and walking without a guide.

Paddle the Abel Tasman Coast to Anchorage

Begin at Mārahau with a detailed safety briefing covering weather, local conditions, hazards and self-rescue techniques, followed by an on-water assessment before setting out independently. From here, the day is yours to explore the Astrolabe and Anchorage coastline at your own pace, paddling through clear water past golden beaches, sheltered coves and forested headlands.

Take time to explore around Adele and Fisherman Islands, where seals and seabirds may add a wildlife encounter to the journey, or paddle into the sheltered waters of Torrent Bay lagoon when conditions allow. By late afternoon, reach Anchorage and hand over your kayak for collection, leaving you free to settle into the beachside campsite and enjoy an evening surrounded by native bush and the waters of Tasman Bay.

Camp at Anchorage, Then Walk the Coast Track Home

Wake beside the beach at Anchorage with the freedom to shape your second morning before beginning the walk back to Mārahau. You can head directly onto the Abel Tasman Coast Track or add extra exploration with a side trip to Te Pukatea Bay and Pitt Head, where elevated viewpoints look across the coastline and Tasman Bay.

Another option is a detour to Cleopatra’s Pool, a natural swimming spot tucked into the forest, before continuing south. The main Anchorage-to-Mārahau walk covers approximately 12.4 km and takes around 3.5 hours, winding through native bush and past secluded bays before finishing back at Mārahau — completing a journey that lets you experience the southern Abel Tasman coast from both sea and land.
