The 2 Day The Jewel Self-Guided Cycling Tour is a two-day, one-night eBike holiday in Central Otago, suited to confident cyclists and wine lovers. It includes premium eBike hire, boutique accommodation, breakfast, a Carrick Winery experience and return shuttles. Cycle from Gibbston through Kawarau Gorge to Bannockburn, then follow the Lake Dunstan Trail to Clyde. Departures operate between September and May.

Experience the Kawarau Gorge Trail and Central Otago Wine Country

Your two-day self-guided eBike adventure begins in Gibbston, one of Central Otago’s renowned wine regions, before following the Kawarau River through the spectacular Kawarau Gorge. The 32 km first day combines dramatic rock faces, turquoise water, suspension bridges and historic gold-mining landscapes as the trail opens up previously inaccessible sections of the gorge. With the freedom to ride at your own pace, there are plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs, explore the surrounding scenery and experience the character of the region.

As the trail continues towards Bannockburn, the landscape changes from rugged gorge scenery to vineyards and open Central Otago countryside. The route passes along Felton Road, home to some of New Zealand’s best-known wineries, while the Goldfields Mining Centre provides an optional opportunity to discover more about the area’s gold-mining history. Combining scenic cycling, wine country and local heritage, this section of The Jewel is ideal for travellers looking for a self-guided cycling experience that goes beyond the trail itself.

Frequently asked questions

The Jewel can suit riders who are comfortable cycling but have limited experience using an eBike, as a bike fitting and briefing are provided before departure. The electric assistance can help make longer climbs more manageable, although riders still need to pedal and be confident controlling the bike on changing trail surfaces. It is worth familiarising yourself with the bike’s controls and assistance levels during the briefing so you can adjust the support to suit the terrain.

The two trails offer a mixture of riding conditions rather than a single consistent surface. Expect compacted trail, gravel, rocky sections, bridges, boardwalks and some narrower or more technical areas, particularly around parts of the Kawarau Gorge and Lake Dunstan Trail. Good-quality cycling shoes and comfortable clothing are recommended, while riders should be prepared to adjust their pace according to the surface and conditions.

Although each day involves around four hours of riding, the total day can be longer depending on how often you stop. Scenic viewpoints, photography, wineries and points of interest along the route can all add time to the journey, particularly around Gibbston and Bannockburn. Planning some flexibility into your day allows you to enjoy the Central Otago scenery without feeling rushed to reach your overnight accommodation.

The Jewel combines two distinctly different Great Rides in one short self-guided cycling journey, taking you from the Kawarau Gorge and Gibbston wine country to the Lake Dunstan Trail and historic Clyde. Rather than following a single rail trail or spending several days in one location, the itinerary gives riders changing scenery, varied trail experiences and opportunities to explore Central Otago's wine and gold-mining heritage.
