Premium eBikes assist with climbing, but riders still need to manage narrow tracks, corners, descents and uneven surfaces.

Frequently asked questions

The tour can suit riders with a reasonable level of cycling fitness, but it is important to be comfortable spending several hours in the saddle over consecutive days. Some sections of the route, particularly the Kawarau Gorge and Lake Dunstan Trails, include more demanding terrain and are recommended for confident cyclists. Riders should also be prepared for changing weather and exposed sections of trail rather than expecting the entire journey to be an easy, flat ride.

You do not need to carry your main luggage with you on the trails. Luggage transfers are arranged between accommodation stops, allowing you to ride with only the essentials you need during the day. This is particularly useful on a four-day itinerary, as you can keep your day pack light while your larger bags are transported ahead to your next accommodation.

Mobile coverage can vary along the trails, particularly in the more remote sections of the Kawarau Gorge and Roxburgh Gorge. It is sensible to download any information, maps or directions you may need before setting out and keep your phone charged throughout the day. You should also avoid relying solely on mobile reception for navigation or communication.

The trails can be enjoyed across the warmer months, with spring, summer and autumn offering different scenery and conditions. Summer generally provides longer daylight hours for cycling, while spring and autumn can bring cooler temperatures and changing weather. Regardless of when you travel, Central Otago's conditions can vary during the day, so layered clothing and sun protection are useful.
