Start your journey in Clyde, a charming heritage town. Ride through open farmland and past the historic Chatto Creek Tavern. Pause for a photo at the iconic Poolburn Gorge Viaduct and its tunnels. Overnight in Omakau or nearby Ophir, known for its historic stone buildings and peaceful rural setting.
Today’s route takes you through the Ida Valley, one of the trail’s most scenic stretches. Visit Hayes Engineering Works and Historic Homestead in Oturehua, a fascinating glimpse into Otago’s inventive past. Stop by the Gilchrist’s Store, NZ’s oldest continuously operating general store. Relax overnight in Oturehua.
Cycle over the highest point on the trail at Wedderburn Saddle and enjoy sweeping views across Maniototo Plains. Continue through classic Otago high country to Ranfurly, known for its art deco architecture. Or stay in Waipiata, a smaller, peaceful village by the Taieri River.
Finish your ride on a gradual downhill stretch to Middlemarch. Pass through tunnels, viaducts, and quiet farmland, soaking in the region’s solitude. In Middlemarch, enjoy a celebratory drink and explore local galleries before your onward transfer or return transport.
