From here, we journey along the stunning lakeshore, stopping at Te Anau Downs, the starting point for the iconic Milford Track. 2. Eglinton Valley
As we leave Te Anau and enter Fiordland National Park, our first stop is the majestic Eglinton Valley. Carved by ancient glaciers, this landscape boasts cinematic views reminiscent of The Lord of the Rings. Itโs a mesmerising introduction to Fiordlandโs natural wonders, setting the stage for even greater sights ahead.
3. Mirror Lakes
Next, we visit the enchanting Mirror Lakes. A short stroll brings you to these perfectly still waters that reflect the stunning Earl Mountains. On a calm day, the reflections are so pristine, your photos might leave people guessing which way is up!
4. Lake Gunn
Continuing along the Milford Road, we reach the tranquil Lake Gunn. Named after an intrepid explorer, this peaceful spot is popular for fishing and photography. Take a moment to soak in the serenity and capture the beauty of this hidden gem.
5. Hollyford River & Falls Creek
As we drive further, the powerful Hollyford River comes into view, its boulder-strewn rapids creating a dramatic scene. Nearby, Falls Creek introduces us to the first of many awe-inspiring waterfalls in the areaโa true spectacle of nature.
6. Darran Mountains
Climbing higher into the rugged Darran Mountains, we pause to take in the breathtaking scenery. Keep an eye out for the playful kea, the worldโs largest alpine parrot, known for its curiosity and cheeky antics.
7. Homer Tunnel
Our journey continues through the remarkable Homer Tunnel, an engineering marvel carved through solid rock. Emerging on the other side, the valley plunges sharply toward Milford Sound. On rainy days, the surrounding cliffs come alive with countless waterfalls cascading down the mountainsides.
8. Milford Sound Cruise
Arriving at Milford Sound, itโs time to board your boutique cruise with Cruise Milford, renowned as the top operator in the area. On a smaller, less crowded vessel, youโll enjoy a more intimate and informative experience. Glide past New Zealand fur seals lounging on the rocks, towering rock faces that rise dramatically from the water, and cascading waterfalls fed by ancient rainforests.
