Conquer the Queen Charlotte Track MTB: Ship Cove to Punga Cove

This one-day mountain bike ride starts with a peaceful water taxi journey from Picton to Ship Cove, where the adventure begins. After a solid climb to the Ship Cove Platform, you’ll be treated to expansive views over Motuara Island, Hippa Island, and even the distant North Island. The trail dips into Resolution Bay before climbing steadily through Manuka and Kanuka forest to Tawa Saddle—an ideal spot for a scenic lunch.

From the saddle, the route descends into dense native forest rich with towering beech trees and coastal greenery. Riders pass through The Pines and can take a break at Furneaux Lodge before continuing along the coastline of Endeavour Inlet. The last stretch rolls gently through Big Bay’s tidal flats and punga-filled gullies, finishing at Punga Cove where you can unwind before the afternoon water taxi returns you to Picton.

Track Difficulty

The Queen Charlotte Track offers breathtaking scenery but is a challenging and technical route for mountain biking, best suited for experienced single-track riders. The trail features loose rocks, tree roots, branch litter, and steep climbs and descents, demanding a high level of skill. After heavy rain, the clay-based surface becomes slippery, with reduced traction and significant mud buildup, adding to the difficulty.

For novice or beginner riders, this trail is not recommended. Instead, consider exploring the Picton Waikawa Track or sections of the Link Pathway, which offer a more suitable and enjoyable biking experience. Walking the Queen Charlotte Track is also a fantastic option to fully appreciate its beauty at a gentler pace.

Grade: 3-4 with loose rock, roots, and rutty single track.
