Travel by Heritage Train and Cycle the Otago Central Rail Trail

Combine a scenic train ride through the Taieri Gorge with two days of cycling across Central Otago, travelling from Dunedin to Queenstown on one holiday. Board the Taieri Gorge Railway at Dunedin Railway Station and follow the Taieri River through steep-sided gorges, hand-cut tunnels and historic viaducts towards Pukerangi. From there, transfer to Hyde to begin cycling the Otago Central Rail Trail, following the former railway through the Maniototo countryside towards Wedderburn.

On Day 2, cycle from Wedderburn towards Oturehua and into Poolburn Gorge, where the trail passes through historic railway tunnels and across viaducts surrounded by schist rock formations. Finish in Omakau before taking the included shuttle via Cromwell to Queenstown. Frequently asked questions

The Taieri Gorge Railway offers a memorable introduction to Central Otago, travelling through rugged landscapes that are difficult to appreciate from the road. During the journey from Dunedin to Pukerangi, you can admire steep-sided gorges, dramatic rock formations, river scenery and historic railway viaducts that showcase the engineering achievements of an earlier era. Keep your camera ready for the changing views from the train, and remember that the railway journey is a key part of this tour rather than simply a transfer to the cycling route.

You do not need extensive cycling experience to enjoy this tour, as the Otago Central Rail Trail is generally graded 1–2, with mostly gentle gradients and a well-established trail surface. However, you should feel comfortable riding a bicycle for approximately three to four hours a day and be able to control an e-bike, including braking and cornering. If you are new to electric bikes, use your bike fitting and briefing in Middlemarch to practise the controls and understand the pedal-assist settings before starting your ride.

Your overnight stay is arranged in quality ensuite accommodation, providing a comfortable place to rest after your first day of cycling. Wedderburn is a small rural settlement in the Maniototo, known for its open landscapes and peaceful countryside rather than a large selection of shops and restaurants. It is sensible to bring any personal essentials you may need and check meal arrangements in advance, as dining options in small trail communities can be limited. Your accommodation may vary depending on availability, so confirm the final details with the tour operator before travelling.

After completing the second day's ride in Omakau, meet the Kiwi Journeys transfer departing at approximately 3:00pm for Cromwell, where you connect with the onward shuttle to Queenstown at around 4:30pm. These transfers are included in the tour arrangements, making it easier to finish your cycling adventure without organising separate transport from the trail. When planning your trip, allow enough time for your onward travel and confirm the transfer schedule with the operator before departure, especially if you have a flight, accommodation check-in or other booking in Queenstown that evening.
